Household notebook (Queenie's Idea)

I noticed on another thread Queenie mentioned she had made a household notebook for her DS when he moved into a new home.

I made a recipe book for my dd's 21st ... asked various relations and friends to submit their favourites, plus budget recipes .. it's a wonderful idea!! (Also, I made my son a Household Notebook when he and his g/friend moved in together ;) )
I thought this would be a fantastic idea to add to the gift thread (until Martins book comes out of course ;) ) It would be useful for people moving into their first home but also for students as they go to University and it could be used as a chapter in the new book.

So Queenie (sorry, I'm being cheeky here :D ) what sort of thing did you put in the book? Anyone else got any suggestions for what to put in?

So far the only thing I have done for my daughter is to print out some of my favourite recipes, including some from this board of course. I would also be interested to know what sort of thing would be good to put in a book like that.
I must admit, it wasn't till my daughter left home that she realised there were things I knew that she didn't!

I shall be starting one of these soon, for my daughters, and i thought I would use some of the household cleaning tips as well as some of the recipies that I use. i think a section on managing the household budget, what to freeze in season, and how. Maybe some hints on recycling items, such as old jumpers for cushion covers, vests/ teeshirts for cleaning cloths and so on.

I think the list is fairly endless and would be based on your own expereinces as well as using some of the wonderful ideas from all the old stylers on here:beer:

    Yep :)

So all the book really needs is a URL - for here! :)

Well OK, perhaps not, but the URL should be there somewhere. In fact, in this day and age there's probably quite a collection of useful URL's that could be added to such a book.

.... Oh wow! Now you're asking!! :rotfl:

    Okay, here goes:-
    Recipes
    - some were from his old school dinners "recipe" collection which was sold at a school fayre when he was just 6yo ;) ) others came from family, friends, internet friends, others I'd collected over the years and some recipe book family favourites

    HM Cleaning recipes

    HM Beauty recipes.
(A few were photocopied from the one's my mum wrote and stored in her bible, which I inherited and were aimed at his g/friend)

Section on Shopping Hints/Tips - Menu Planning - Seasonal Shopping - Price Book Basics

    Fridge/Freezer Storage Times

    Basic Storecupboard & standby's

    A "List" Section:
I designed some lists and put several copies of each in there:
ie ... shopping list, budget tracker, pantry inventory, freezer inventory, price book pages, weekly menu planner pages,

HM Doggie Treat Recipes (they have a dog!) plus other doggie tips.

Umpteen Uses for Plastic Carrier Bags (+ other everyday items)

    How to read your meter

    How to Budget

Consumer Rights & Responsibilites - Sales of Goods Act

    How to Complain

    Tenant's Rights

    Dealing with Debt
(ok, I did that because ... "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink" ;) And I know he would have to be in real big do-do before he'd ever admit to me if he had a problem ... this way, he has the info if the worst should happen! Bit like leaving an invisible safety net :o )

    Address Book Section:
This included all the numbers/addresses I could locate that I thought may be useful ie: Local Council Offices, CAB, local surgeries, hospital, Police, vets, etc.
Plus blank pages for his own records.

I know there was more, but that's all I can remember from the top of my head. Plus, I bought them their first "Pantry" basics, the ingredients for the HM Cleaners and hm bath treats. And other stuff I'm not going to mention :o

Did I overdo it do you think? :o :rotfl:

    Queenie,

How long did this book take you to do?
    Sounds brilliant.

Luis - you'll find loads of recipes at Pet Food Recipes - (US Site) HTH :)

AussieLass - it took around 3 weeks to put together most of the basics, then I added to it over another few weeks. The "book" is in fact a decorated A4 ring binder because it's something which is meant to grow and develop as his life/circumstances does.

There is a household notebook at the website in my sig. It's generally used as a reference book for information to your own place (room sizes, emergency information, routines, pricebook etc). I sort of have one but I don't utilise it as much as I could. I think I'll be adding to it Queenie style as she has some really useful ideas :T:A

Had to change my sig so the website is : http://www.organizedhome.com

Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!
