Milk not keeping :(

Milk doesn't seem to be keeping very well for me at the moment - it is turning 2 days before it's printed sell by date, whereas in the past I have always found that it usually can go on a couple of days past.
I have turned up my fridge setting in case that is the cause, but has anyone got any bright ideas?

Is your fridge definately cold enough or has your thermostat gone? When you feel the back of your fridge is it cold? Is the door shutting properly? Is the door 'sticking' when it's shut or has the seal gone?
It shouldn't turn so quickly if it's cold enough.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -

This happens to me too whenever I buy it from my local shop but only happens in the summer - I think that as they dont open and fetch the fresh milk in until 7 am its getting caught in the early morning sun for too long. What a treat!0 -
You're not buying it from a Co-op are you? They're terrible for having food and milk go off too soon.Just run, run and keep on running!0

This is happening to me when i bought from tescos, after 1 and half days and unopened of buying it, it was totally off, thought it was a one off! no. Told tescos, they dont seem to care. Been buying it since in the local co-op keeps much fresher.0

I know this is a silly response but is there a storm on the way? I always found that my milk would turn if there was a storm on its way or if it was muggy and humid outside. It wasn'r only summer it did this winter as well. My only advice maybe is to buy less milk I know in the long run it wont work out easier for you but for now it may be an option. Hope this helps. Sorry its such a silly idea though0

Things you can do are:
switch to skimmed (if you don't already use it) as it keeps for longer
buy from elsewhere - local shops have a slower turnover of milk, so it'll be in their fridge for longer before you get it - therefore get it from somewhere with a high turnover of milk. Or have a good shifty through the fridge and buy the carton with the longest to go to the expiry date
Get yourself a fridge/freezer thermometer. They are cheap, just a pound or two out of Woollies, maybe Poundland or the like will have them. I have one and it's excellent - v.useful so that you aren't wasting electricity having your fridge or freezer too cold. If possible get one marked with the "safe" temperatures then you can tell at a glance if fridge or freezer is at the wrong temperature.
Keep milk away from strong smelling things eg onions. Maybe this has nothing to do with it...but I have a feeling the warmest part of the fridge is at the bottom, so perhaps keep your milk away from the veggie bit at the bottom and put it on a high shelf (rather than in the door) where the cold air can circulate around it.
Hope that helps.0 -
And always get the milk from right at the bottom and right at the last normally there are about 1/2 days difference to the ones at the top, same for other chilled food and bread.
Yep! i am the one who dig right at the bottom of shelves whenever i shop!0 -
It doesn't have to be your fridge that's at fault - it could be storage or handling at wherever you bought it from. If everything else in your fridge seems to last as it should there's a good bet that your fridge is fine. To check to make sure (if you don't have a fridge thermometer) you could buy your milk from a different shop and see how that keeps.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I've said this before, but perhaps using organic mik? I only buy organic semi-skimmed now, and the price difference is barely noticeable.
But in terms of staying fresher, mine does. I was told (and don't know how true it is) that organic milk could only be bottled with other milk from the same day's milking. But non-organic milk can be bottled with milk from a number of different dates, and it's the FRESHEST milk that determines the use-by date; which is bonkers, because it's the least fresh milk that will determine when it turns!
I'd love to have this verified by someone in the industry. All I know it that my organic milk lasts REALLY well and I can't remember the last time I had to abandon a carton.
But yes, it could be something to do with the place you buy it - has that changed? If workers aren't storing it properly or refrigerating it soon enough after delivery, there could be problems. The work they sell at work is always off after a couple of days, but that's because they stand around gossipping, leaving the milk in crates on the floor for hours before they put it in the fridge.0 -
