Cheap way to clean a rug

I am new to the MoneySavingExpert forums but I have a question which I am hoping someone might have an answer to.
I have a large white rug that has become quite grubby with it general everyday use. What I wondered was if anyone knows of a cheap and easy way to clean a rug and return it to it's natral color?
Thanks,
SwissTony

Hello ;D
What's the rug made of? You might be able to put it in the washing machine.
My neighbour has a chinese rug, she cleaned it with a steam cleaner.Bulletproof0 -
know what?
after years of shilly shallying cleaning the rugs with this stuff and that stuff
in the end i sent out the old fart to the patio with a hose pipe box of soap powder and the deck scrub
soaked the rug with hose then sprinkled powder on it scrubbed it to a good lather hosed it down to rinse well
hung over the patio table to drip then over the banisters
brilliant
like a new rug
we didnt care as it was old and had had it we were giving it to my son for his back hall
in the end it went in his living room as it was like a brand new rug
now we do all of them that way and they come up great0 -
I always wash my sheepskin rugs in the washing machine, hang over line to dry and brush up with the cat brush. Look great when I have finished.0

Hang it on the washing line, and then beat it with a tennis racket!!!! Great for relieving tension!!!!
If dirty, scrub with salty water, rinse and leave to dry away from direct heat!!!!!0 -
cool, i put it in the bath and sprayed some dilute shampoo onto it and then showered it off ... YUK!!! will leave to dry on washing line n see how it comes out.. thanks
