What's it about?

There are currently two special offers which could slash your train travel costs: 2 for 1 off-peak return tickets with Silverlink, and journeys for as low as £5 for the over-50s with Central Trains.

2 for 1 tickets

Simply download a voucher from the Silverlink website and fill in your details, then hand it over at the ticket office when you pay to get an extra ticket for free.

This offers lasts until Until 10 November 2007, and is valid for journeys between any two stations on Silverlink routes - these include stations such as Birmingham New St, London Clapham Junction, and Milton Keynes Central. For a full list of services and stations, take a look at Silverlink's route maps.

£5/£10 flat-rate rail travel for over 50s

Print out a voucher from the Central Trains website to get the discount (obviously only valid for anyone over 50). Enter your journey details, and it'll show the the price and availability of routes. Once you've chosen a route, click on the 'print voucher' link for that journey, and hand over the voucher at the ticket office when you pay.

The offer's available on selected journeys from ten major stations - see a full list here - and you can book for travel up to Friday 14 September. At the moment selected routes are £5, while others are a still-reasonable £10. First class upgrades are also available for a £5 supplement on many routes.

Save even more money on train travel.

I used this one the other day: it became quite entertaining! I'm actually travelling from Bristol to Liverpool, but as I needed to change somewhere it made sense to break my journey at Birmingham and use this.

So, I handed over the voucher and asked if I could buy a ticket from Birmingham to Liverpool. The lady had never seen this before, and didn't know if she could sell me a Central Trains ticket. So she checked with a colleague, who looked at my voucher, found the offer on HIS computer and gave her a code to use. Sure enough the offer came up.

Then she asked me what to do with the voucher! I said I had no idea, but presumably she needed it to send it off. She checked with her colleague, who said yes, he thought she should keep it to send it off. And then I said something about perhaps they should have asked for ID / proof of age, and the chap admitted he hadn't read the T&C so didn't realise I had to be over 50! :rotfl:

I had to wait at least 15 minutes whilst Milton Keynes Central decided it was okay to use the voucher so expect resistance at the station (maybe take a printout showing the website!?)

I then asked for a plusbus ticket and got told 'no'. So much for encouraging us to use public transport!
