After a bit of success with growing from seed this year, mainly herbs was wondering what sorts of things could i harvest the seeds from for next year so as to keep growing, was mainly thinking of chilli's as my plants are doing really well so how would I go about putting them aside for next year do they need to be dried? Thanks for your help

I've used the seeds from shop bought dried chillies before now with great success - so I'd guess for those of yours you could try them straight from a fresh pod or set a pod aside to dry for later...Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I'm not allowed to be involved in the garden, that's hubbys department (not that I mind in the slightest:p ) but he collects seeds & pops them straight into a a paper envelope & stores them in the warm conservatory, he never seems to have any problems gertting them to germinate the next year.

hi spalding
I collect as many seeds as i can from herbs and flower plants.
Coriander- I collect and store some of them in a dark place till next year and use the rest by grinding them for curries. you could do this with chilli's as well.
To store seeds i usually put them in a brown paper bag and label them.
Last year i grew sunflowers and when the head had finished flowering i chopped it off and put it in the greenhouse to dry, left it like that till this year and have now seperated them and have tons of seeds.
Lupins blow there seeds away in seconds so i put a bag over the head to collect or chop the heads off and put them in a carrier bag tied and just wait now i have lupins all over the place. I think though that you can only collect the seeds 2-3 times then have to start from fresh again. Just an after thought, last year i grew loads of chillis and am still using them now as i make chilli jam. To dry chillis i hang them up in kitchen (very decorative) then store them for curries and grind some to powder or you can put them in olive oil in a jar and put outside in the sun which will release their flavour........you've got me going now....gonna have to go in green house0 -

They make lovely Christmas presents and, if you do them now they'll be really potent for anyone who likes HOT chilli. Another idea for you PatWhen life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
