Every day for the past four days, when I have turned my computer on the system date has been changed. It was 31st Dec 2001 yesterday. Today, only the time had changed.
Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a way to stop it?
Thanks in advance.

hi, i would imagine it is your motherboard battery. these are normally LR44, and when these go flat, time and date start messing up - these are not rechargeable.
Open up the case and look for a shiny round & flat battery -a little bigger than a 10p. Should only cost £1.50 to replace. i doubt very much your problem is virus /malware related etc

How old is the computer?.
I suspect it could be the CMOS it's an on-board semiconductor chip powered by a CMOS battery inside IBM compatible computers that stores information such as the system time.
It normally is a straight forward job to change the battery
use google with CMOS BATTERY as your search example http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000239.htm0 -

Thanks everyone - it's looks unanimously like I need a battery for my motherboard. I'll get my brother in law to take a look - he's been itching to have a look inside. The computer is three years old (this month), and I apparantly bought the wrong type (good ol' PC World). I specifically asked for one that could be used both for office applications and on-line gaming and got advised to buy this one. Hubby was well disappointed that he couldn't play his games, so his brother has suggested having look at it for us and putting in the stuff we need to run games.
Grrr - this is probably the beginning of the end of this one.DMP mutual support number 174Total debt now (April 10) £0! - total paid off £30,221 or 100%I'm now debt free after 6 years!!:jNon smoker since June 2006 :j0
