Home Made Ice Cream

I have been considering buying an ice cream maker for a while now, but am concerend it may end up being another "dust gatherer" relegated to the garage awaiting redeployment at a car boot sale. Does anyone have one & use it regularly?
My interest was rekindled this weekend after reading the ingredients list on a tub of my favourite ice cream - hardly any natural ingredients & lots of nasty chemicals & the like. At least if I make my own then I know what's going into it

I have one and use it most weekends as I never buy "processed" Ice Cream. The basic ingredients are very simple and I really don't understand the other stuff that's added. And that includes the "premium" brands like Haagen Daz - I think people are attracted by the fancy flavourings, more than anything else, but these are really very simple to replicate at home.
Whether or not it gathers dust is entirely down to youI keep mine out on the worksurface where it simply begs me to make a batch of ice-cream
Why not get a reasonably priced one to start with - the type that you put in the freezer and then have to remove every hour or so to churn the crystals. If you like that you could then consider upgrading to one with a built-in freezer unit. This makes the ice-cream completely in the machine - no need to put in & out of the freezer. These are expensive though.
I have the Gaggia Gelateria. If you click on "Shop" they have reconditioned models too that come with a 12 month warranty. As always, shop around.
The Rosemary Moon Ice Cream book is brilliant and St Delia also has lovely recipes.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

I have one of the cheapo ones - you have to chill the bowl over night, then pour the mixture in and let it churn. That's it - once it's done you put it in the freezer to store, you don't have to churn the mixture again. It only makes a litre at a time. It's the Philips one I that Amazon have and it makes good ice cream from cream, egg yolks and sugar
That said, I would lurve on like DebtFreeChick has. Ice cream making for me is a fad - I'm doing it now, probably won't next week. Maybe if I didn't have to remember to put the bowl in the freezer, I 'd make more But maybe not!0 -
I have one that is pretty much a dust gatherer - for the main reason that I have a fridge freezer, and if I put on the freezer cold enough for the ice cream maker to be effective then the fridge freezes too.... not ideal...
I wish I had the room for a chest freezer0 -
It's the cheapy £30 Phillips on amazon I've been looking at.
Maybe it can be my May PIN money challenge - transfer all my multi-buy savings from the supermarket into my savings account til I've got £30 to buy it with (Haagen Daas 2 tubs for a fiver!).
Alternatively I might have a look on Loot to see if I can get one on there that's been gathering dust in someone elses garage!0 -

Me too! I wouldn't even be able to fit a bowl in my fridge/freezer most times so pointless me getting one of the cheapie ones but I can't justify spending £200-£300 on the Gaggio one"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Yes, it is an extravagance. I bought it in my "not so MSE days"!
Re freezer - we also bought a floor-ceiling model, which has 7 or 8 drawers. Another extravagance, but we had to replace an old fridge/freezer. This new freezer takes the same width & depth as a fridge/freezer, so we didn't have to find extra space for it. We then bought a second-hand small fridge for £30, got rid of the tumble dryer, and put the fridge in its place.
If you have to replace a fridge/freezer, you might want to consider something like this, especially if you have no room for a chest freezer.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

It's certainly something I would consider once I move (if I ever find anywhere suitable  ) but I don't have room to swing a cat here for the stuff I've already got and I'm forever tripping over boxes of stuff never been unpacked (moved here temporarily over 3 yrs ago!) and still have stuff in storage
Had I come across the Gaggia when we were still a large-ish family then I would probably have bought it but there's only me and my youngest now so it does seem rather an extravagence... who knows, one day maybe LOL!

I bought the Hinari one when it was on offer at £19.99 at Netto. Has anyone got this one, is it any good? If it's not then I'll take it back as it's unopened as yet.0

I like brown bread ice cream but the caramelled breadcrumbs scratch the inside of the non stick bowl of my ice cream maker. so I tried making it in a tupperware tub then emptying it into a mixing bowl and using a hand mixer to beat it once it had just started to freeze and it came out much better than in the ice cream maker - I think it had more room to beat air into it. So now the ice cream maker is a dust gathererIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
