Cleaning Coins & Other Things

In my job, I get asked the most weird questions, which are not even job related - love dealing with people, however I don't know it all.
Anyway, in my quest to help out -

Cleaning coin collection - not a clue here.
Suggested coke which used to work years ago, but they have changed formula apparently, and it doesn't work so good. I thought maybe bi-carb or with vinegar, but was wary in suggesting this, just in case!

Baking
Stopping fruit sinking to bottom of cake. Vaguely remember something about tossing cherries in flour, but I could be wrong.
Fatless sponge recipe.

And for a laugh............
Blockage, wanted a man round, thought it was a plumber for blockage in sink/toilet. Turned out it was a bowel problem! It was all to do with sewage at the end of the day, but nowt that a plumber could help with, as I first suggested!

  • to stop fruit sinking, i always roll in flour before mixing in, and always put it in very last and only lightly stir. can't help on the coins though.

I clean coins with brown sauce (to give as birthday presents). If coins are part of a specialist collection may not be wise!

Fruit, can't really help on this one I do know that the bigger the fruit the more it will sink. I have a recipe somewhere for a fruit layer cake using full size cherries, sultanas, peel and other stuff, you just mix it all up and put it in the oven. When it comes out the cherries are at the bottom and the peel at the top with the other bits in the middle in layers through the cake - it's very clever

Fatless sponge cake - again, not exactly what you are looking for but there is a fat free bran loaf recipe HERE. and there are 2 options HERE that don't have butter in (they use vegetable oil instead), not sure if that is suitable they are the chocolate beetroot cake and the courgette cake.

clean copper coins in ketchup or cillit bang (according to tv)

to stop fruit sinking, dust in flour, and add at very end, mix lightly - helps if the cake mix isnt too runny either

fatless sponge - otherwise known as swissroll mixture
equal quantites of flour and sugar - 1 egg per oz of flour
whisk eggs and sugar in a bowl until thick, slowly fold in flour, tbsp at a time - cook at about 200c til springy

    blockage - lactulose

I have a cake recipe that uses no dairy or eggs if that's any use

    Molly Cake

    250g stoned dates
    300ml water
    85g plain flour
    85g wholemeal flour
    50g ground almonds
    3 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp mixed spice
    500g mixed dried fruit
    80ml orange juice

Pre-heat oven to 170C. Line 900g loaf tin.
Bring dates and water to boil and leave to cool.
Mix flours, almonds, baking powder and spices in a bowl.
Put mixed fruit and orange jiuce into date saucepan and mix.
Add whole lot to dry ingredients and mix.
    Spoon into loaf tin.
    Bake 45-50 mins.

  • Glace cherries won't sink if you rinse them off and dry them first.

Dont clean coins from a collection it will reduce their value.
Coin collectors are very fussy and wont even handle them without gloves on as the acid from their fingers adds wear to the coin.

To stop fruit sinking in a cake mixture, keep the mixture thicker or, failing that, you can chop up the fruit and/or coat the fruit in flour.
