have you tried a dvd lens cleaner? i think it looks like a dvd but cleans the lens when played. have seen them somewhere but did not bother looking into it
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D
  • Yes, Wazza, I tried a lens cleaner too, but thanks anyway.

I also even tried washing some of the DVDs in warm, soapy water and patting them dry with kitchen towel. I read that somewhere, (think it was on the MSE forum!) Sometimes this actually worked. I also did this when one of my partners CDs started playing at double speed.
  • An update -

Yesterday I spoke to Mark, the Belfast store manager. He said that it was most likely to be a fault with the old unit as the DMR-E55 and DMR-ES10 were definitely compatible. I said I found it strange that the old unit had worked fine for about 16 months then only started playing up when combined with a newer unit.

In any case he asked me to take the recorder into the store along with the unusable DVD-RAM disks and a pre-recorded DVD which also will not now play.

I get the impression he does not want to lose a customer but I explained that I would buy a cheap unit from Tesco rather than spend £60 on a repair. He will check with Panasonic as legally the unit is out of warranty but I raised the point that it was not even 2 years old and surely a £220 DVD recorder would be expected to last longer. He agreed this was a grey area.

    Will keep you posted.
  • Well, I took the DMR-E55 into the Belfast store where James tried viewing a few disks and he verified that there is a fault. He contacted Wilmers, the distributors in Belfast and their response was that if I pay a £25 estimation fee, they would assess the unit and fax details to Panasonic who would then decide if they would take any action.

A bit iffy so I said no I wasn't happy with that. I asked James to contact a senior manager in Panasonic and explain that I had been buying their products for 10 years and if they didn't help me now, I would not only buy no more Panasonic products but I would also broadcast everywhere about my misfortune.

James phoned Panasonic who were reluctant to let him speak to a manager. When he did eventually speak to someone called Steve, he wouldnt give a contact number for me to ring. So folks, thats what Panasonic think of all of us.

Does anyone have a telephone number/e-mail address for a senior manager in Panasonic?

James also said he would speak to John McDonald, Richer Sounds' managing director in Ireland - he also suggested that I send John an e-mail which I will do.

I will wait for a response from this MD but if their is no joy, I will be taking further action. On this note I would appreciate some advice. Who is best to contact - Fair Play, Trading Standards or the GCC? James informed me that the expected lifetime of such a DVD recorder should be 4 to 5 years so should I be thinking of going to the Small Claims Court? Presumably any complaint/action would be against Richer Sounds, the retailer?

I appreciate the advice so far offered by MSE members and would like to say thanks in advance for any useful responses to this post.
  • Well, success at last!!

As a gesture of goodwill Richer Sounds sent the DVD recorder to a third party for assessment and didn't charge me. James informed me that the third party misunderstood their instructions and must have thought the unit was still under warranty because as well as assessing it they actually repaired the unit! Apparently the transportation unit was faulty.

My next action was to e-mail Panasonic expressing my dissatisfaction at their attitude. I detailed the problems I had experienced with the DVD recorder and explained that at least 5 DVD-RAM discs had been rendered unusable.

I have just received a reply from Panasonic expressing their apologies etc. etc. and they are sending me 2 replacement RAM discs.

So it has taken over two months but at least I now have had a positive result.

Thanks again to all the MSErs who contributed with advice.

Two discs? That's a poor effort by Panasonic. I would send a link to this thread via post and email to the MD of Panasonic (UK), to bring this to his attention.
Point out that this is a very popular website and he might like the 'right of reply'.
Poor showing for Panasonic. Thumbs up for Richer Sounds.

Thanks for your suggestion, Donnie. I couldn't find details of the MD of Panasonic (or a senior manager) or else I would have contacted them.

As you say 2 discs isn't exactly anything to get excited about especially as I specifically mentioned to Panasonic that 5 discs were ruined.

However I am pleased with the overall result i.e. getting the recorder fixed for nowt without the added hassle of going to the Small Claims Court

Gotta say Well Done to Richer Sounds, but very poor on Panasonic.

2 disks when you have 5 faulty ones

Write a 'nice' letter to this guy (Special/recorded Delivery of course)
