Tinned Tomatoes

OK peeps - just typed out a long post giving relative values of salt in tinned tomatoes after watching Gillian McKeith and lost my internet connection and lost it, so briefly:

Tinned tomatoes contain lots of hidden salt. The ingredients don't list it cos it's in the tomato juice (I presume). However, Tesco value chopped toms contain 0.2gm sodium per can, which I believe is 0.5 gm salt - 1/3 of an adult's recommended maximum daily intake. Passata - 500 gm carton contains 2 1/2 gms salt!

Given I use so much, are there any brands out there that contain much less salt? Th eonly other option is to cook my own fresh tomatoes, but that's gonna get expensive and is my last option.

Eek! I use tons of tinned tomatoes & they do tend to be the value ranges. I knew pasata was bad for salt so I avoid using it when cooking for my toddler.

I have a healthy eating guide for children here, issued by Organix Goodies who make baby food. In it is a list of the "dirty dozen"additives and pesticides etc and what to look out for.

    Under salt it says

1.2% salt (1.2g/100g) is deemed as "a lot" by the Food Standards Agency. This may be shown on the packet as Sodium at a level of 0.5% (0.5g/100g). Eating too much salt can cause long term health problems such as high blood pressure and strokes. More than two thirds of the salt we eat each day is hidden in processed foods. Check out their labels and choose foods that show less than 0.5g sodium or 1.2g of salt per 100g.

Do I take that this means Tesco value toms are ok? I'm a bit confused, doesnt take much LOL

I doubt that very many people eat a whole can of tinned tomatos in one go - in our house we would usually have a quarter of one per person (i.e. one tin for the family in chilli, bolognaise etc) which would then work out at one twelfth of the daily allowance - I don't see it as a problem.

Aldi's tinned peeled plum tomatoes say they have a "Trace" of salt in 100g so presumably that is significantly less than the 0.1g of fat per 100g serving.

Roflmao - I can  I eat a whole tin on 2 slices of toast with mushrooms for my breakfast - not everyday but often :D

  • Morrison's Bettabuy (cheap own label) also says "trace", which I suppose is too small an amount to mention.

Particularly good value at 35p for 700g (quite a large jar).
  • Sorry - forgot to say I was talking about PASSATA, not tinned tomatoes. I prefer the sieved tomatoes because there are no complaints about skins/cores/foreign bodies from those who aren't too keen on lumps of tomato, but don't actually mind the taste.

What confuses me (and it doesn't take much, I know:o ) is that the Tesco value chopped and plum toms both contain the same ingredients, ie 60 % tomatoes, tomato juice, citric acid, but the plum toms have only a trace of sodium, yet the chopped have 0.2 gm per tin? Is there actually a difference or do they consider it a small enough amount not to bother about. They actually label it as 0.1 gm per 200gm serving (1/2 tin)

Trouble is, when I make a bolognaise, I use 1 lb mince, 2 or 3 tins of chopped tomatoes and 1 carton of passata, along with onions, mushrooms etc. It may make a lot, but I figured it was better to eat more tomatoes and less meat. Maybe not, huh, unless they're fresh tomatoes!

Must go drink lots of water to wash all this salt out.

No your wrong there. Tinned tomatoes are better for you than fresh as the fresh that are sold in our supermarkets aren't the brilliant shades of red that indicate the highest amounts of betacarotene and lycopene. Whereas the tinned variety are fully ripened red varieties and as Tomatoes don’t lose any of their nutritional value in high heat processing, canned tomatoes and tomato sauce are highly beneficial.
