Problem opening new programs

I recently had a virus and done some cleanup using malwarebytes etc.

The thing is now when I go to open most programs I get the 'open with' box popping up and I can't even seem to open some applications such as firefox. I used to have carbonite and dropbox running in the background but they both seem to have disapeared!

Anyone know whats going on?

Thanks!

Were any program files infected with the virus? Were they deleted as part of the clean up process?

Hi Turbobob. Not that I'm aware of. I just ran the malwarebytes application.

OK, so to take Firefox for example, if you navigate through My Computer to c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox is the file firefox.exe there?

If yes, does it run when you double click it? If its not there, it means the program file has been deleted.

Ahh it does seem that some programs seem to have vanished:eek:

Others are still in there however and still won't open without the open with box popping up. For example itunes, however any time i go to open itunes now i still get the open with box and i have to click on itunes in the recommended programs list to get it to open

It sounds like the file associations are messed up and some executables have been deleted as well. Two things you could do really. Reinstall all your applications that aren't working properly. If that doesn't work then a reformat and clean install of windows and applications (making sure you back up all of your stuff first) might be the best way forward.

Are you absolutely sure the virus is gone now?

    Thanks for the advice turbobob.

Not 100% sure about the virus, This is the thread I was discussing it on. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=31831175#post31831175

If I do a complete reformat and reinstall will that definitely clean any viruses?

Yes it would. The important thing would be to not re-infect it.

Well technically it depends on the virus, but i have to agree with "todays" virus it should clear it out..

oh and in-case anyone is wondering what virus can stay on the PC even after a format. any MBR virus would remain (unless you clean the Master Boot Record as well) but i haven't a MBR virus for about 10 years!
