So far Darling says “worse than Thatcher” on News at 10, Zippy back him up on QT, Milibanana says “not as good as Thatcher” on AQ.
Gordo’s statement?
Gordon Brown is giving a press conference in Brussels. He was asked whether he agreed with his Chancellor that Labour’s own figures point to bigger cuts in public spending than those made by the first Thatcher government.
This is a transcript of the Prime Minister’s answer:
” .”
No, that’s not a typo. He said nothing. Asked to endorse the economic analysis of his own Chancellor, Mr Brown said not a word. I wonder why not?

David Miliband MP, Foreign Secretary
Any Questions? BBC Radio 4
Mr Miliband admitted that the government would not be able to match the the average rate of increases in public spending seen during the Thatcher years, but that the government would not have to cut as deeply as the worst cuts during the 1980s.
“The average rate of increase in public spending in the Thatcher years was 1.1% and we will have to cut deeper than that”, he said.

Of course he won't answer. It's same as last time when Darling said it would be the worst recession for 60 years and Brown wouldn't have it; but he turned out to be right. What scares me is that brown obviously isn't willing to make the necessary cuts to government spending, or at least be honest about it, and I can't see Balls-up (there you go, I've coined it
) doing anything about it. “I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -
"Alistair Darling has conceded that if Labour is re-elected public spending cuts will be "tougher and deeper" than those implemented by Margaret Thatcher. "
This is what annoys me about politicians. Why not make the cuts now if they are needed rather than waiting until AFTER an election. They all claim to put the country before the party but it's rare we witness this.....0 -

Doctor - Where's your joy in life? Where's your optimism?
Romana - It opted out

Well, they have started to make cuts... despite the rhetoric. They've already cut approximatly 15 billion. Which was the 'easy' cuts. (basically, the cuts involve allowing projects to finish, and then not starting new ones... no new hospitals, schools, prisons, etc). It takes longer than you think to work out a plan for where to cut £70 billion from public spending.
Frankly the figures they need to cut are so huge that the only way to do it is the same way you'd boil a lobster - rather than cut all at once, you hold government spending cuts below GDP growth for the best part of a decade. Plus make cuts where you can.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I'm surprised that people are still falling for this labour/conservative, left/right bullsh1t.
Haven't you realised yet that it doesn't matter what party or "ideology" you support, the same people remain in charge and the same !!!!!! happens?"The problem with quotes on the internet is that you never know whether they are genuine or not" -

I do like Alistair Darling. He has an integrity and honesty that many on the Labour benches lack. He tells us it like it is. I am sure that if Labour wins he will be canned in favour of blinky Balls and relegated to the back benches. That will be a real pity.
I think you have been double fooled by the Labour spin machine. This is what they want you to think. 'Darling in shock honest chancellor announcement'. Proof that Labour is honest when Darling says it. Thats what they tried to do with the budget speech but it didn't go too well once the budget had been analysed for what it really was, plus Cameron really laid into the whole Labour bench and reduced Brown to a smirking schoolboy.0
