Building a web site???!!!

Options
Hi

I have just started a new business and want to open my own web site. However I am a complete technophobe!!!
Can anyone tell me where I start...how much it costs and how do I then get it linked in Ask, Google ,Yahoo etc.
Is there a simple template that I can follow....or is it really complicated and you have to have a genius build it for you?
Thankyou for any help you can offer.

  • Making a website is quite easy and can be done using notepad. The problem is that with a business it has to look quite professional as it is advertising you.

If you want to have a go at making your own I suggest using dreamweaver, it is a brilliant bit of software and you can download a 30 day trial. There are also loads of tutorials on the internet.

Apart from the actual making of the site you are going to need to buy a domain name, if it's a .co.uk name I would suggest this company:

    http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order;jsessionid=138A594A4107730B9E01DFE230D86DB7.TC33a

I have bought numerous domain names from them and they are very helpful.

You will also need space to store your website, the above company supply all in one packages to suit most peoples needs.

There is one thing I would say. If you are going to pay someone to sort this out for you be very careful. I was called out one day to fix a network, after a while I got talking to the owner, he told me that he got a small computer company to make them a website and sort out the domain etc. They were charing him £5 a month for the domain name and £5 a month for an email address, £120 a year. The actual cost of this if you did it yourself would be £1.99 plus the 5 minutes it takes to register.

Another thing to watch out for is how much you will be charged when you want pages updated on the site, it can end up being quite costly.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.
  • A good start for a beginner would be to use one of the hosting companies with an online web site creator, e.g. http://www.1and1.co.uk. All their hosting packages include 'WebsiteCreator' which allows you to design and launch your own website. Their cheapest is 1&1Home on Linux OS at £4.99+VAT/month.

Have a look at the Own Website Threads in Techie Board FAQ's, there a lot of info in there too.
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........
  • the complexity of building a website depends on the content...if it just needs to be a 'static' page ie nothing changes (not based on a database for example) then it is VERY easy there are authoring tools like dreamweaver and although i wouldnt really recomend it ms word/open office can make webpages (very dirty html in my opinion). If the page has to be 'dynamic' then these pages are slightly more complex (a dynamic page is like my chamber-choir site (see my sig) certain features are found in a database- the calender for example and users can physically update the database online and the pages update respectively....

buying domains are cheap i use http://www.ukreg.com/ and have had no probs the hosting of the actual site will need to be thought out, in particular the size of content as well as the expected number of hits for example....not really sure what else to say, i will willingly answer any questions either pm me or send an email to my addy in the sig (substititing the [at]=>@ [dot]=>.)

  • Is it just a site you want? or do you want to sell stuff.

Here's a small site that's quite easy to do https://www.antonyvaks.com

Here's a very simple e-commerce site that is also very easy to create https://www.dollshousestore.com

I've built many sites so I'd be happy to guide you.

My favourite source of domain names http://www.123-reg.co.uk/

You may already have free hosting space with your ISP? You will need your own good domain name.

domain names are cheap here: http://www.session9.co.uk/ £6.50 a year for .com and c.o.uk and others. Hope this helps.

You seem to be duplicating this post in many threads...

...as stated https://www.1and1.co.uk is only £1.99 per year.
