Fair-play to HSBC for being open and upfront about the delays, even if they weren't at fault. I wonder how the other banks will handle these delays?
  • Is this story accurate?

I can't find any reference to these delays on the HSBC website, and I would have thought that they were in breach of the Cheque & Credit Clearing 2-4-6 arrangements which says inter alia:

"For the first time, after paying in a cheque you can be sure that at the end of six working days, the money is yours. You're also protected from any loss if the cheque subsequently bounces, unless you are a knowing party to a fraud.
In addition, if you have a basic bank account it is likely to enable you to withdraw cheque funds more quickly."

As the whole point of the 2-4-6 changes was to move the risk of any delay in the clearings from the customer to the bank, I have real doubts about whether these delays are enforceable under the FSA's treating customers fairly requirements.

The whole point of these changes was that the risk of cehques being delayed in the clearing moved to the bank rather than the customer

I'm Surprised that they actually require the physical cheque to undertake the processing, I know that other banks scan the cheques and part process them electronically, this must not be the case for HSBC where the processing must take place centrally rather than the branches scanning them and sending them electronically.
  • Excuses are not always BAD Weather - In Belfast, they continually fail to deposit cheques lodged on the same day before 3pm.
They continually blame the courier but surely " the worlds largest bank" can organise some kind of electronic or digital transfer of whatever cheques are heading to the process centre. I believe they just " Dont care " and obviously save money somehow.
