I need to buy one for a christmas present, would like to get one that is in true moneysaving VFM. I dont think it has to have a huge memory, its to relieve my daughter's laptop, of photos and music I believe

Budget?
Also what format - a nice tidy little 2.5 inch drive that is powered by the USB port(s) or a 3.5 that offers more capacity for your money but uses a power brick?
So long as you stick with a recognised name you can't go far wrong. I've found recently that Amazon really take some beating on prices as they offer free delivery (and say that you'll still get stuff for Chrismas on free delivery so long as you order by 18th - I'd be a tad wary of that though).0 -
now that all sounds very technical, my other daughter has one I think its powered by usb.0

OK, to put it another way-do you want a portable drive (2.5in) powered by USB, or a desktop drive (3.5in) that is larger and needs mains power?
And your budget? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
just get a 1tb, or even a 1.4tb external drive. 70-90 quid.
i bought one from play a year ago, great product.

I'd say that WD Passport is a good pick and Amazon look like being cheapest too.
The 30GB drive is just not worth buying imo unless ultra portability is an essential0 -
I always suggest purchasing one that has both a usb and e-Sata interface - future proofing0
