Has anyone heard of 2nd home Housing Benefit??

I want to look at a new House today with a Housing Association yesterday and we are going to take the House but they need someone to move in next week so i told them we get Housing Benefit and that we would have to give a months notice to move out where we live now and the woman said we may be able to get something called 2nd home Housing benefit so we could move in before our months notice is up and that the rent for our 4 weeks notice would still be paid with this Benefit and also the rent on our new house from the 1st day we move in.

I have not heard of this before so is there such a thing?

It does exist, I have just applied for it myself.

Had to give 28 days notices on one flat but had to take a second flat immediately. They want a reason why though mine was for medical purposes.

You also have to move in on the day you get the keys (or the tenancy starts) to new property otherwise it will only be paid from the day you moved. This might help when it comes to putting dates on forms.

    Hope this helps.

    Many thanks for that.
  • Its actual term is 'benefit on two homes'. Just to clarify

Benefit on a second home sounds like you have two and as Lee says - its only avaliable to MP's

Savagej is correct with the details they have given

In order to get housing benefit paid on 2 homes you need to first show that you could not avoid having the rent liability on 2 properties.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

i have never heard of it for moving eg from private into housing asociation, i was told by my local housing benefit office that the day your new tenancy starts is the day they end your housing benefit on your old home..
and this is what your deposit should cover (great)
the ony way i know that housing benefit covers 2 homes is if you have had to leave one home due to domestic violence, and they still apy benefit on both for a short time..
you would be better off ring housing benefit..

Benefit on two homes can be paid if the overlap was unavoidable. Moving from a private tenancy to a HA tenancy (where you had to sign up before your notice period was up on your private let )would fall under this catergory. This however is upto a maximum of 4 weeks, if your notice period exceeds this then you have to foot the bill yourself.
So provided the OP can show that the overlap was unavoidable, they move into their new property at the start of the tenancy , they can get HB to cover their notice period.

It can be paid (as you have said) if someone has left their previous home due to violence this is up to a maximum of 52 weeks.

Benefit can also be paid on two homes if a family is so large that it has to be housed in two properties ( only in HA properties, doesn't apply in the private sector) and this can be awarded indefinately.

There are other reasons as well
