PS3 Drops wireless Signal often

Wondering if any of you guys have experienced this at all in the past.
Set up - laptop with external HD + router etc upstairs, PS3 downstairs.
PS3 setup for sharing files (I.e. Movies).
When I stream a movie wirelessly thro the PS3 - 9 out of 10 times it drops the signal and I need to go upstairs and switch off and back on the router, so thatthe PS3 picks up the signal again. Then I need to navigate back to the point in the movie etc. It could be at any point in the movie.
Any suggestions on how to cure this - should I move the router closer to the ps3 etc?
Cheers :j

What router do you have? Some routers (lesser brand names) have a very weak wireless output - I've seen routers give up at a range of 10 metres through a door.
The fact that restarting the router fixes the problem would suggest that that's the source of the problem. Try using your laptop in the same room as the PS3 and see if the signal drops.
If you've got the space on your PS3, copy the files onto the PS3, then you don't have to stream. That's what I do. You're OK so long as the video files are Divx encoded (typically avi's, wmv's are not so PS3 friendly)0 -
My PS3 did this and in the end I went for a wired through the mains network adapter, suitable for HD 200Mbps. Running PS3 Media Server it works a dream, streams everything I throw at it and is no trouble at all, if this is feasible for the money it may be the better solution.
There is a discussion on these further down the forum, or do a search.0 -
Thanks - what should I search for mains network adaptor?0

It is a Netgear that I have (provided about 18 months ago by Sky) - is there a recommended router that i should change to?

Cheers0 -
unusual, Netgears are pretty solid....think the fact you're using Sky's knife'n'fork firmware may not help...could possibly flash it with DGTeam firmware if it's a compatable model, or even the netgear original fw......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

the only thing that went wrong with my netgear router was when it got taken out by a thunderstorm.
now i'm using a d-link piece of crap.
also, is the router in a compact space?
if it is, it may be overheating and this might be whats causing the drop outs.0 -

Interesting....I use a D-Link 2640B (no ISP-botched fw) and it performs pretty well..which you using ??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

op i found that the ps3 seems so reach a threshold of 50% signal and then drops all intensive wireless streams so it can maitain connection to psn etc
also the ps3 has slightly weaker pickup
ie when the ps3 registers 60%, my laptops will detect 70-80% strength
might be the cause
as mentioned try a mains network adaptorBack by no demand whatsoever.0
