I have been offered an as new Samsung R510 for sub £****, has only been used a couple of times before the owner expired ! , has 3.072 ram, 286Gb HDD, virtualy no internet usage history, nothing at all stored on the hard drive, It's running Windows Vista, I have a spare copy of XPpro with coa, What problems could I encounter formatting the hd and doing a clean install of xp, AND at that price is it a bargain ?

No real problems installing XP clean if you have the media and COA.
You may have fun getting all the drivers installed and working - laptops are usually harder than desktops, as they have more devices.
Make a note of all the devices in Device Manager so that you can install any "unknown" devices later. Best to download all the XP drivers + SP3 (assuming 32bit) + IE7 + AV and burn to a CD. That way you can be well on your way before having to connect to the net.

Not familiar with the model spec, but doesn't sound too bad a price.
  • Thanks for that, needed convincing that I needed a new laptop :D

  • You are going the wrong way... Windows 7 is next up, and a free beta copy of Office 2010 can be had too.

£436 +vat A generous spec. and good looks makes this a solid budget buy.

  • @ totalsolutions,

Going the wrong way ? in moneysaving mode, I'm getting a virtually brand new decent specked computer with vista home (total web use 4_5 times, probably a couple of hours at most no files folders) I have a legal copy of XP pro which I can use if I choose, Not taking into consideration the W7, & I'm not one of the "must have latest windows" brigade, I'm happy with pro as a system, Thanks for the review it was very useful, I think for the price it's a decent laptop,

    I'd go for it Alan.

It's not a massive expenditure for a decent notebook.

But if you're really in money saving mode, try a copy of something like Ubuntu :). Cost you a blank cd to try.
