Overnight storage query

I have a property which is all electric and I'm still trying to figure out how it works.

I thought the water (once switched on) heated up overnight and then was hot the next day, in fact when we moved in I tested it and this is what happened. I have a dial on the wall which I can use to get a max 2 hour boost if I need hot water straight away.

I switched the water on the other day (not the boost dial) and it heated up straight away, therefore I'm assuming using electricity on the higher day tarriff.

Can anyone with experience of overnight storage water/heating offer any advice?

Thanks

First of all, are you on E7? If not, it doesn't matter when you heat the water up.

Whether you are or not, the water should only heat up during the timer specified period, unless you have overridden the timer.
Of course heating will be cheaper at off peak times if you do have E7.
If you do have E7, depending on whether the circuit the main immersion is on is live 24/7 or just during the E7 off peak period may affect when it is possible to use this heater.

The boost facility will usually only heat part of he tank, but will be available whenever you manually switch this on.

    I am on economy 7.

I have not yet seen a timer anywhere, does anyone know where this would normally be? Do all properties have them as I'd be surprised if I had missed it.

    Thanks

Modern E7 timers are not user adjustable, integrated into the meter and controlled by radio, which is why you may not have seen one.

Thank you, I'd imagine a house built in 1979 would be classed as modern?

There's not really anywhere a timer could be hiding, there's no nooks and crannys and the house was empty when I moved in, I gave it a thorough clean so I would have come across it if it was there I think.

So, does anyone have any idea why my water heating may be working the way it is? I haven't been up into the loft to have a good look at the tank, would it be worth doing this?

    Whoops, my mistake :o
I thought you had a timer on both immersions.

Unless the non-boost immersion is on a separate circuit that is only live during off peak periods, then both immersions will work whenever they are switched on.

hmm, this is still confusing me. I'll have another look at it and see if I come up with anything.
