starting up an online retail business

Have Pm'd you with the wholesaler info0

I think I'd wait until I could afford larger orders before approaching wholesalers when you can show them you are a serious buyer. Under £100 is really a retail amount, serious wholesalers just aren't interested in such small orders.
As others have suggested get some stuff from a car boot or perhaps try charity shops, use this to try out the concept and build up Ebay feedback.
Self assessment is easy, however if you start buying from wholesalers you'll have to register even if you abandon the idea after a trial. If you sell half a dozen bits on Ebay from a car boot then abandon the project although technically you would still need to register in reality I can't see many people bothering.0 -
good luck....
everyone has got to start somewhere....
while you are finding a good wholesaler and saving funds for your first order, i would def trawl the carboots and charity shops for secondhand emo/goth clothes to sell.
In all honestly in my opinion, there might be a better profit margin for you in the secondhand clothes market,
Your main clients/customers are going to be youngsters/students for this type of look, and their budgets might be limited...
dont forget, not everything might sell, due to price or size etc.... so you will have dead stock, that just doesnt shift.Work to live= not live to work0 -
Go the the London Edge exhibition in I think it's February, loads of loads of alternative suppliers. Tickets are free.0

Lots of good advice here. I think trying to find second hand clothes in the style will be good to build up capital. I have also had a supplier of a good line of alternative clothes get back to me. They sell items in packs, so will contain 2 of each size for clothes and various amount of each colour for accessories they also have no min order you just pay for delivery. So once I get some money in I can start to order from them. I know their stuff is good because I have a couple of skirts from their line. I can't wait to get started now!

Gothdolly I am a bit far from London unfortunately (Manchester based) but I will look into it. Cool trikerchick I figured that there would probably be some stock that will not sell for what ever reason. I guess I could try promotions on them and if the end of season they do not sell then see if any of my friends want to buy them at what I bought them for. Worst comes to the worst I'm sure a charity would be greatful to recieve them.0 -
what you got to remember is stock that doesnt sell will be hindering your cashflow, i know you can write the stock off that deosnt sell, but i think the key to a successfull business is CASHFLOW.... as this is the down fall of many young businesses in the early stages....
