Can my mum use NHS For Bad Teeth?

Mum has always visited the dentist and tried to look after them

She is now 65 and the dentist has suggested she has implants at a cost of 10k!!!

Aparently the NHS does not cover this - Does anyone know what the helpline for the NHS is please and whether any help is available?

The NHS option would be a denture.

Simple, cheap and effective. But not the 'Rolls Royce' option like implants.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Implants are available on the NHS - but for very specialised treatments / cases.

If the dentist was so sure this was the best clinical treatment for her and there were no other viable options to consider, such as a bridge or denture, s/he can approach the PCT for funding.

The funding request and the clinical evidence to support it must come from the treating clinician - has your dentist indicated there is nothing else to be done / s/he's tried every treatment option?

And I doubt this is the best clinical treatment, so it seems as if the dentist is ripping people off and should be struck off!

No need to look after dentists, they are on enough money to look after themselves..
  • MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.
  • From the original post, the dentist only provided the idea of implants as a suggestion.

I don't see how this is ripping people off. my dentist once suggested that i look into an implant, but not at their practice as they didn't carry out the procedure. the original post doesn't provide enough information to make this judgement.

The dentist HAS to discuss every option with the patient - otherwise it is not 'informed consent' - and then he COULD be struck off.

Having implants is the very nearest thing you can have to having your own teeth back again. As such, it must be brought up with the patient and explained.

It is up to the patient to choose the best treatment for them based on all the relevant information, and what their purse will allow.
