I have a memory of someone posting on a thread that they got awarded a year but couldn't take advantage of motability because obviously by the time they found out there was less than a year to run. I think they said that they rang and the person they spoke to was able to reset/rearrange the dates and they were then able to get a car. So get on the phone. Sorry, I can't remember whether they said they rang motability or DWP.

The other benefit available, though not to you, is Carer's Allowance if there is someone who cares for you for at least 35 hours/week and earns under £95/week.

In addition, some councils have discounted leisure facilities, there's the CEA cinema card to get a carer in free. 50% reduction on trains if you're confined to your wheelchair. All in all there are quite a lot of associated 'perks'.

I just think it's really cheeky in the fact that they do that, ive been waiting 4 months and finally been awarded, so that basically leaves me with 8 months left of DLA.. yes I get back payed.. but they know what they are doing to ensure that I don't get a car out of it.. and then I've got to apply again in 3 months, when I feel like I've only just applied as it takes that long.. I'll try ringing both.. I guess if you don't try you don't get.
    Thanks :)

Does my mobility allowance include a car as I have only been awarded a year?
    Thanks :o

Just to clarify, if you have HRM you may be entitled to have a car under the motability scheme, but you have to give up your HRM DLA in exchange for the car (depending on the car you choose, you may also have to pay an up front lump sum).

Sorry if you already know this, it is just that sometimes people think that disabled people get a 'free' motability car in addition to their HRM DLA, which isn't true.

If you want/need to apply for a motability car, it is worth speaking to DLA and explaining the problem. They may be able to adjust the dates to enable you to qualify. Although do look ahead - if the mobility component of your DLA is reduced or withdrawn on renewal, that would leave you without a car. If you already have a car, you might be better off using your DLA to run your car until your renewal. If you are still entitled to HRM DLA then, there is a reasonable chance that you may get the award for longer next time.

In the meantime, as it is not long until you will have to re-apply, it is worth starting a file now, and keeping copies of all letters from specialists, occupational therapists, and anyone else involved in your care, as well as the DLA decision and any letters from this application.

Did you keep a copy of your DLA application? If not, ask them to send you a copy now, as it makes life so much easier when you come to fill the renewal forms in. Also, if you were seen by a DLA doctor, ask them to send you a copy of that report too. You are entitled to a copy, and your medical advisers will find it easier to give you a report in support of your renewal application if they can see what was said this time, and can confirm that there has been no change in your condition (if that is in fact the case).

You may be entitled to carers allowance. In all the paperwork they send you confirming dla there would be advice on what else you could claim and contact numbers.

They will re-assess your personal situation after a year and decide what assistance your require. I recieve dla for my son and his condition was monitored again after 18 months. They then granted 4 years before the next assessment as he is seen by many health proffessionals on a regular basis.

generally the 1st set of DLA has a short time span, mine was 2 years, its based on a number of factors, as you condition may change, ur needs change, your mobility, may get better.
as the other poster said if you have a car you exchange your higher rate mobility for the car, but their needs to be at least year for the dealership.

You apply again, apr 5 months before the renewal date, this allows any checks to be done, the paperwork to go through the system.

If your on Income support - you get a premium payment
Can apply for a free bus pass - issued by council
Can apply Cinema card - free admission for carer (there is a thread on here)
    Blue Badge for parking
Exempt for road tax, if that car is yours no probs, if you nominate another car owner, this can get sticky, as they will only then be able to use the car if they have you in it - but the trip if for you, or they are doing a service for you, such as picking up a prescription. If they were going on holiday without you they could not use that car.
Disabled rail card - you buy that
concessions - cinema, activities, museums, etc - but these are all dependant on the individual premises.

    .

The OP hasn't said that anyone is caring for her and if there were, it would be the carer who would claim.

That's an interesting predicament for the OP. In others experience how likely is it the DLA office will extend a HRM award so you can avail of the Motability scheme? By the time you get your letter if they only award you HRM for 12 months through no fault of your own you are just weeks out from being able to get a Motability car so I am sure they would extend it for you?

An extension would be the exception to the rule, unless you requested a reconsideration/ appeal, in which case it could be extended, not changed or withdrawn altogether.
    Gone ... or have I?
