  • Yes that one. You made the mistake of bullying the poster for failing to use language in the way a professional would, and gave no useful advice. We now need to wait and hope the original poster Altin comes back and gives some pointers to their circumstances.

I can't really see how this constitutes bullying. Perhaps providing definitions of saving and investing would have helped a little more, but surely jem16 was just asking for a clarification of the original question, which seems fair enough?

That's twice you have accused me of bullying for no good reason.

If pointing out the difference between saving and investing helps to give more meaningful help, I make no apologies for doing so.
    and gave no useful advice.

I also said that for a regular monthly saving then a Regular Savings account would be best. I can't see what else I would suggest for something starting in August 2010 - who knows what interest rates and savings products would be available then.

Or did you miss that in an attempt to jump down my throat?

We now need to wait and hope the original poster Altin comes back and gives some pointers to their circumstances.

Have you no suggestions for him/her?

This site is becoming infested with people who seem to trawl the threads for something to show how clever they (think they) are and then start an argument.

Hardly any of the posts on this thread have had anything constructive to say - just puerile sniping............

either GROW UP or GO AWAY !

What a ridiculous remark. Even Dunston doesn't bully people like that. You have made the same unhelpful intervention on another thread in the last few hours and it gives them no useful advice. If someone wants suggestions as to whet to do with their money, and you have some suggestions, put them forward. Do not have a go at innocent questioners because they don't put their enquiries in formal financial-expert language.

In this case Altin may well want to consult a (real Independent) financial adviser, or people here may want to make suggestions, but more information would be useful such as: do you have other savings or any debts, what timescale do you envisage before possibly needing the money, etc.

    That was totally unnecessary !!!

We seem to get a lot of posts which to honest are frankly nasty these days

I think what Jem16 was getting at was if the poster wants just to put the money in a savings account which are paying the best interest rates maybe someone could advice the poster or if the poster was looking for a long term investment he or she needs advice from an IFA as nobody on here can advise them as his full financial position has to be considered

or people here may want to make suggestions, but more information would be useful such as: do you have other savings or any debts, what timescale do you envisage before possibly needing the money, etc.

Also not many people on here are qualified to give advice and those that are would not even attempt to give advice because all advisor's would want to do a full appraisal of his financial situation before giving advice

    Answering the OP directly:

    1. If you want to save then have a look at this link. Bottom line - fill your ISA's!!
    2. If you want to invest in stocks and shares (S&S), the the possibilities are endless. IMHO, with only £30k you do not need an IFA. Have a look at different websites. Try The Motley Fool, Hargreaves & Lansdown for starters. Another one about portfolio management here.
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

I too have made the mistake years ago of thinking that saving money was investing. I have seen numerous posts in this forum where people have asked the question that they want to "invest" but want easy access to their money so I don't see anything wrong with asking the question to clarify exactly what the OP wants.

altin: your question isn't easy to answer and the advice to read the numerous posts in this forum is also good advice as you haven't given much information. Some of the questions I'd ask are:
Are you looking to invest or save your money, do you need easy access to this money?
Do you have an ISA, have you used your full allowance for this year?
Do you have a mortgage, and can you use the inheritance money to overpay on your mortgage, preferably penalty free?
Do you have any outstanding debts?

    Etc......

I think with £30k an IFA could still be worthwhile if the OP knows nothing at all about investing. You could lose so much more than the IFA's fee so it could be money well spent.

However if you are prepared to do lots of research and spend time doing so then Hargreaves & Lansdown would be a good choice.

Or up as well as down, which might be more appropriate a reminder for anyone who's been watching the markets over the last couple of years ;)
