Free Home Security System

  • Direct Response rep has just been around with his pitch.

System on offer includes 5 IR movement detectors, CO2/smoke detector that's coupled to fire brigade and a monitored burgular system. Very good (and I think honest) pitch that highlights all the (considerable!) costs.

Deal is that you can be asked to contact upto 3 customers to say that the system works and was fitted correctly (without telling them you got it for free) ie thier marketing pitch. They are giving away 7 "free" systems in this area.

What I would have to pay for to get the sustem (supposedly worth £1400) is
    - £199 installation
    - £35 register fee payable to the police
    - and (wait for it) £2747 for 5 yrs of monitoring (payable IF monthly or price reduced to £2297 if paid upfront)

Even at the best rate, that is equiv to 1.26p per day for 5 years. Price reduces to £1000 for the 5 yr periods after.

Seems a fairly hefty up front payment. I do want a burgular system and the monitored thing is a good (if not expensive) piece of mind. Can't see how my contents insurance will go down enough to cover that amount of money.

As usual guy won't take no for an anwser so will call me tommorow. Doh

We had a similar thing quoted for us. A few things to consider

    1. Read the contract carefully as the one we had allowed them to put up the monthly charges at any time after 2 years and no limit on hiking them up.

    2. I spoke to my alarm fitting cousin who said the system would be next to useless if not linked up.

    3. A friend of ours had it andstill got burgled - you are signing up to a preferential treatment by the police fire and ambulance - you are not classed as an emergency. I suppose what would you do if you were in charge at emergency services - get a call with details of an emergency or from a company who says one of their customers isn't answering the phone. Unless this one links up to police direct I wouldn't bother.

I was fortunate in that I got my system when ADT were just entering the residential market and it was a FREE burglar alarm the only cost to me was £35.00 police registration fee. I had to sign a 3 year contract for £25.00 / month this price included maintainence (6 monthly & as and when required). I did opt to extend my system to cover fire and it cost an additional £75 for the sensor & installation.

After my 3 year contract expired I telephoned them and asked if they could reduce the monthly payments or I would cancel the contract and they duely reduced it to £20.00.

    I'm well happy icon7.gif

    Tony

PS - I was only joking when I said about cancelling the contract, once you've had a "monitored system" you'll never be without it. The peace of mind it offer's along with the reduced price of buildings and content insurance is enough of a sweetner! icon12.gif

    EDIT
Just to pickup on TD's point #3

With respect to police attendance of monitored alarms, the way ADT works is that when a sensor picks up movement they look for one of two things. Firstly they look to see if any of the other sensors are triggered and or a second trigger on the first sensor. In any of these cases the police respond as if a "Reported Crime" is in progress. We had a trigger of this nature and I can assure you that the police arrived within 6 minutes.

Our alarm also has a "Personal Attack" feature, we have also used this. The police response was fantastic, with the first 2 police officers arriving in less than a few minutes closely followed by an additional 3 police officers.

A few years ago a sub-contractor for ADT offered us a free install of a monitored alarm. This consisted of a control panel, 2 PIRs and two door alarms and Alarm box. Unfortunalty we had 3 cats and the contractor assured us the PIRS could be set 'pet friendly' this was a blantant lie, we found out. However ADT wouldn't amend the miss-selling, though I believe they no longer use contarct sellers. We had our use out of it by disbling one PIR for the cats room but never, I felt, got value for money. I was quoted 500 quid to install proper door and window sensors. I am no longer with ADT.

they came to my house with a similar offer. they said they would fit an alarm system for free, and there were only a couple alarms that we under this offer.
i made an appointment to see them and they seem to be very legit, i looked at their website

and i had the alarm fitted 2 days later. it does have a 7 day cancellation period. there bulk of the fee was the monitoring feefor 5 years. and a £25 fee to west mids police so that they turn up to my house when the alarm goes off.

its worked so far cant ask for more than that
