ebay caravan woes!

Won a caravan in an ebay auction last week. Went round to view it and he assured me that it was dry. The rain was hammering down and the inside seemed fine. It was too wet to go digging around outside.
Collected it yesterday and spent all afternoon cleaning it and then to my horror found that the underside of the floor was rotten in all four corners.
Phoned him to tell him about what I'd found and that he could have it back. He agreed to come round and view it for himself. He phoned me back later to tell me that under ebay's T&C there is no refund and therefore won't be giving me my money back. Also said he can't afford to.
I paid by credit card through PayPal and although it's gone from my account PayPal haven't paid it into his account yet.
He advertised the caravan as clean and ready to take on holiday which it obviously isn't as it's not fit for purpose.
Does anybody know where I stand please?
Regards

Eddie you should have checked the caravan all over regardless of the weather BUT contact paypal ASAP and file a complaint against the transaction whilst you try and sort this mess out.Tell them the caravan was not as described and you will be covered if it was under 'buy it now' on ebay.

Where the seller is a private individual, the goods must be “as described”. The goods are not legally required to be of “satisfactory quality” or “fit for purpose0 -
Thanks nexuss,
I know I should've checked it regardless of the weather and how I wish now that I had. I've logged a complaint with PayPal and requested that he repays the money. They give (I think) 20 days for him to respond before looking into it. Will give them a call 1st thing in the morning.
Had hoped I'd be covered by ebay and PayPal's buyer protection but guess what. They don't include cars, boats, caravans etc0 -
I am not to sure but i am trying to point you in the general direction ASAP.Have you tried to ring your credit card company to clarify the situation ?

Don't think I'll get much joy there actually
"The purchase must be made directly between you and the trader, so there must not be an intermediary or agent involved. This includes Paypal, Worldpay and Google Checkout, which have their own schemes to enable consumers to make claims for their money to be paid back."
But thanks for the hint0 -
As nexuss said, it was for you to satisfy yourself that the item conformed to contract.
Caveat emptor!
Unfortunately, I don't think paypal will help you as a recent post on MSE said paypal will not entertain a snad dispute on an item you collected in person (for the above reason)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
I think you may have to chalk this down to experience0

From the 'other' caravan thread (now removed) it is entirely possible for you to sue via small claims court and get your money back. Whether that is right or wrong as you actually had the chance to inspect th eitem before accepting I wouldn't want to comment, I am merely stating that it has been done before and is therefore winnable.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. This is not a serious problem if it is an old caravan. The rotten wood can be cut out and replaced. The other caravan tread was about a caravan with internal damp, this is much harder and costly to repair.0

How much did the caravan cost ?0
