Debenhams

Took my GF to Debenhams this morning. Bought her a new jacket and paid with real money. Check out staff tried to sell me a store card. I told them that store cards are evil and are the work of the devil! They weren't very impressed!

A member of staff at Wallis on Gracechurch Street in London told me that I could save 15% on a pair of shoes if I opened a store card. I refused, saying I didn't want a card with an interest rate of 29.9% for the sake of it. She then told me that I should open the card, get the discount, and then pay it off within a month and close the account again.

I told her she should be ashamed for encouraging people to apply for credit at rates that border on loan-sharking. I pointed out that for the couple of quid I'd save, it wouldn't be worth the time I'd spend !!!!!!ing around sorting it out. At least she had the decency to blush.

She was most miffed when I didn't even buy the shoes! :rotfl:

aww in defence of the check out staff - they are pressured to sell (they don't set the interest rates). Just say no

i once did open a card to get the 10% discount, then piad it off there in there (Dorothy Perkins) and never ever used it again. But like you say its the hassle, its a credit search

I agree with dogrose, if you pay your bill in full, then you can use cards to *your* advantage. Very much the MSE ethos of screw the companies ;)
Debenham cardholders often get discounts. But, you have to be very self disciplined.

When dh opened up our one, he forgot to tick the card protection box and when the bill came in, there was a % charge for the card protection!! Not impressed, called, complained ... removed ;):D

When I get loan or credit applications through the post, I reply with this. I've been doing it for a month and have yet to have any adverse reactions. I think it gets the point accross.

I haven't got time to read this crap

I have a debenhams card which I hardly use and when I paid another way I was asked if I wanted a card. I explained why I did not and she told me that she has to get so many people signed up to cards each week and as she was parttime it was really difficult. She also said that she had a meeting that afternoon with her boss for not reaching her targets. She was pressuring me just explaining herself.
New look have the same policy. Their staff have targets to meet on store cards and get warnings if they do not meet them.
