Independant Bakery

Options
Random thread but wanted to share my shock with you all - but don't laugh at me as it highlights that i'm not as great a money saver as I would like! :-[ ;D

This morning I was running late for work and missed breakfast, while waiting at the bus stop I spied a little independant Bakery and thought - 'ohh a roll would fill the gap'. So into the shop I toddled.

I ordered two morning rolls and couldn't resist a cheese scone for pudding this evening (I take a packed lunch to work). When I asked the total I nearly fainted - only 30 pence :o:o:o:o:o

Now, in a supermarket each individual roll would have cost be between 15 -20 pence. In the shop around the corner they charge 40pence. In a supermarket, very often they charge upwards of 60 -80 pence for a cheese scone!!!!!!!! I reckon that I saved at least 60pence.

Now I know it is important to support these independant shops as quality is usually much better etc, but now I have a real money saving reason too.

just plain - i suppose that means I am a bit boring.

They were a good size though, slightly larger than what i think of as a standard size (and also not full of air - they actually have fluffy bread inside the crust! ;D)

It is great to discover that little independent shops still exist and give good service and good value!

Since I made a commitment to reduce (and eventually stop altogether) supermarket shopping I have made a lot of local good acquaintances in my neighbourhood shops. I am also known now in the local Farmers' Market as the bizarre woman who knows lots of recipes for cooking the strangest vegetables! :D

I've been leaving the car at home and walking the school run etc since October and have noticed that you are much more inclined to pop into local shops when you are on foot.

Don't think we have any independent bakeries local to me?

Caterina - how do I found out if there's a farmer's market or farm shop local to me (the farm shop I used to use got sold for housing :-/)

Ditto - local butcher, local greengrocer/farm shop/market/barrow boy in the street.

As they say ... use them, or lose them ;)

I HATE supermarkets - all of 'em. But do use Lidl for dry/tinned goods & household cleaning stuff. Managing to go only once every six weeks, too :)

Am on the verge of doing this. Only got the basics from Tescos this week and got me veg from the market. Much nicer, better variety and much cheaper!

Am waiting for the weather to pick up so I can go and plant some more crops.
