Ask the vet about your pet - free online advice NOW!

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to point out a free opportunutity to ask an expert vet a question about your pet!

If you have a question you would advice on you can send in your question via:
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/lifestyle/pets/features/webchat.html
Just visit the site - send in your question to the vet Sophie de Pelet and then go back and watch the live on-camera event on Thursday 11th May at 1pm. Should be fun and informative.

Hope you find it useful – of course if you have a pet health emergency, do not delay in seeking advice elsewhere now.

The sooner you send your question(s) in the better your chance of it being answered so do have a look and post a question if you want to see your question answered!

  • Can I ask, what's a good food to feed cats that you can make yourself. Whiskas and dry foods cost a fortune and are essentially McDonalds for cats! any homemade recipes I could make in bulk then freeze would be great. thanks

I would disagree that Whiskas, Felix and other catfoods are McDonalds for cats. They offer a well balanced diet that is very good for most healthy cats.

If you are going to only offer home-made food then I'd firstly suggest still offering some biscuits as they help keep the teeth and gums healthy. Also, new reasearch has shown that cats that are fed on a "wet" food only diet are more susceptable to hyperthyroidism as they get older.

If you are going to feed your cat/s fresh food I'd suggest a varied diet that includes poultry, meat, offal and fish. Some rice could be mixed in too.

Maybe it'd be best to have a chat with your vet first as they would know your cats and be able to suggest what would be right for them.

Beware though, once you start this you could have some very sulky cats if you stop!

    Good Luck!

My late, long haired ginger Tom lived to the ripe old age of 23, he lived his final 4 years on raw minced turkey, cat milk and the occasional bit of raw rabbit meat, he was a fairly healthy boy until his death, but he always caught his own rabbits when he was younger, we are now overrun with the damn things since his death a year ago.

  • Raw meat and bones keep the teeth healthy - not biscuits. Felines and canines have never trained as pastry chefs ! Neither did they ever learn to cook meat . Cooked meat tastes delicious to them , even if it isn't spiked aith sugar, salt , ash and MSG type additives , but it is not better for them than raw meat and bones. Big cats , proper are designed for eating red meat, not small cats.

My 8 month old pup has a slight heart murmur and he does this also, we are awaiting an echo cardiogram to check it out, wondering if the 2 are connected.
