Traffic-free journeys

My first post so apologies if posting in the wrong section. There's a website www.viewtraffic.info which provides webcams to quite a few traffic hotspots which you can check out in real-time to see how good or bad it is. Very useful before setting off from work or if you're about to go to shopping as I've seen Carlisle town centre somewhere amongst them.

Hope this post is useful for someone.

In time with more camera coverage this could become a useful tool.
Very (too) limited coverage right now.

That site has about 1% of the cameras available on other sites, particularly the Highways Agency site. All in all, rubbish!

Mark, I agree with you 100% in terms of the camera availability and just wish to state that I am not endorsing this site above and before any other. I merely came across the site because, and I may be abnormal in doing so, but I do like to see how congested a motorway is before I use it - in the past this has been the occasional broadcast on the TV. In fairness I have used the Highways Agency before and, having just tried it again a few minutes ago lest it have been improved, locating a traffic camera is incredibly tedious. Where I believe View Traffic has the edge is in its simplicity of finding what you want. The Highways Agency site does a lot more than provide traffic camera information, and in fairness I suspect it does a grand job. View Traffic looks quite new judging by the Blog posts (which I think is a good thing in terms of making it a more community-driven site) and could be the reason for the low number of cameras already on. However if I wanted to look at how busy Piccadilly Circus is on my lunch break or before setting off for home, I can enter it in the search box at the top of the site - no where could I locate a similar function within the Highways Agency site.

Once again, not promoting the site specifically but if the Highways Agency site was easier to follow I'd use it any day. If not I do hope View Traffic get more cams on as I genuinely see it as being of benefit to a lot of people.
  • Wow, just had a look at Oxford Street, Manchester and not busy as I thought it would be. Off now!
  • Cool site, thanks for posting.
  • Just had another quick look and looks as though some more cameras are on.
  • Or you can go to Google Maps and click the traffic overlay.
