cracked wooden table

I've got a large 'farmhouse' table and the wood seems to be splitting in some places
can I do anything about it?

You could rub linseed oil into it like cricketers do to stop their cricket bats cracking.

Buy some woodfiller. It comes in a little tub, is easy to use, when it's dry just sand it very lightly so it's smooth :)

Sorry to drag an old thread up from the depths but I thought it better than starting a new one.

I have an untreated pine table which has become dry and is cracking. I was wondering about using linseed oil or teak oil but have heard that both can stain the wood darker.

Is there any treatment I can give it which will leave it looking it's natural colour?

I've not come across anything. Any liquid in any shape or form makes wood look dark. Even water until it dries out. Linseed oil would have a lesser effect I reckon.

What you could do is ask on the In My Home board because it includes DIY and so someone might know of something that can help you.

another hijack..but seems better than starting a new thread..I have cracked our wooden toilet seat by standing on it whilst cleaning the tiles..the seat has a clean crack all the way through..
is there a way to glue it back together, or would it be a breeding ground for germs?

There are glues that would do it, though you'd have to make sure you got a waterproof one for wood. Personally I'd just replace the seat. Wouldn't be at all happy if I got the repair wrong and it came apart while I was sitting on it.

well the crack is right in between your legs if you sit on the seat..if you see what I mean..so no real risk of nasty trapped skin!
we are just on an unbelievably tight budget at the moment, so if we can do a temporary repair I would be happy
I did think it would have to be a pretty mean glue to withstand the weight...

If you ask on the In My Home board there will no doubt be someone who can point you at exactly the right product, since it includes DIY.
