My little boys operation - OS help with food!!

My 3 yr old son is going into hospital for 4 days tomorrow for an operation on the palette of his mouth. This means he has to eat sloppy food with no rough edges or chewy bits for 4 weeks !!! Aaarghhh! Now normally he LOVES his food, and I cook all meals from scratch for him - but I'm having difficulty with this one, so help is needed.
Buying ready meals is not an option as they are too expensive, and he has a reaction to most additives.
Here is the run down:
In the parents room is a small fridge, microwave and a kettle.
I need to provide all food for him, as on the ward they don't cater for mouth operations - stupid, I know!
We are admitted at 2pm tomorrow (Sunday) , but he will be able to eat 'ward' food for his tea/supper tomorrow
His op is at 10.30am on Monday morning, so a sloppy diet (if anything) will be needed for that day.
Ideally I then need to cater for all 3 of us until Thursday.
For his last 2 ops he was only 3 months and 8 months old, so he only had milk and pureed food at that time so it wasn't too bad.
So far I have made to take with us:
Shepherds pies - blended mince and gravy so very fine, with sloppy mash.
Corned beef hash - well mixed and sloppy
Mashed potato, tuna and pureed peas mixed together with a little tomato sauce
Yoghurts
Apples - so that I can cook in microwave and mash up for a pudding
My mother will be coming to visit on Tuesday/wednesday, so I can make food today, freeze it, and she can bring it in.
Also ideas for myself and hubby, as we will be staying with my son - last time we lived on breadbuns and liquorice allsorts!
I then need food ideas for main and pudding to keep me going for 4 weeks!!
Thanks in advance for any meal ideas you can give!

Cheese pie is really just mashed spud and grated chese mixed together and then piled into a dish, a little more cheese on the top and then in the oven for about 40 minutes. Will he eat fish pie? or mashed up fish fingers without the horrid yellow coating? very well cooked stew, meat so soft it can be shredded. Rice pudding, a can of evap milk whipped up until its twice the size, melt a jelly in a little water and then whisk into the milk, pour into a bowl or seperate dished and chill.......jelly with pureed fruit.....all I can think of right now, hope it helps....

How about soup blended into broth?
Jelly- custard - rice pudding?
Rice flavoured with stock and blended veg?
Mashed potato with grated cheese melted in it?"This site is addictive!"
Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA

Shepards pie. If you liquidize the mince part.
What about a stew you can mash all the vegetables and leave out the meat.
Angel delight.
Fishermans pie. the fish is soft and easy to swallow.
Hope this helps give you a few ideas. Good luck hope everything goes well.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Thanks guys - i have some leftover mash so will make cheesey mash to take in.
Will also make some jelly - I have some pots of Ambrosia custard which don't need to be kept in the fridge, so also taking those in.
His nurse advised that even bread crusts have to be cut off as they can be too harsh on his stitches!
I'm conscious of trying to get fruit and veg into him also.
Oh, and ice cream was recommended to help heal the stitches! I'm sure he'll be pleased with that one!
I've made some food like shepherds pie this morning - do you think it will keep in the fridge until Tuesday, or should I freeze it today, and get my mother to take it out of the freezer on Monday night to bring in on Tuesday??Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Scrambled eggs spring to mind.Does he like lentils and beans? Iwas thinking of sloppy dhals and hummus.Puddings are easier-yogurt,jelly,mashed banana.
Hope all goes well.0 -
Soup's definitely the way forward for Monday as you can make it at home and then just heat it up in the microwave. I think I'd go for something very thick but well blended so that your son feels full without having to chew anything. Pudding could be lump-free yoghurts.
For you & your husband, how about jacket potatoes? You can cook jacket potatoes in a microwave (takes around 5 mins, depending on size). Prepare toppings at home (e.g. grated cheese, chilli sauce) and put into tubs that can go straight from fridge to microwave.
Puddings: I think I'd stew apples or rhubarb at home rather than trying to cook & mash them at the hospital. Once they're stewed you can put them in a microwavable tub to be reheated at the hospital as/when required.
Once your son's home, how about bananas and custard or HM rice pudding (Mum used to add colour to it as a special treat when we were little - I loved pink rice pudding!), sponge puddings (with yummy jam, chocolate or lemon sauce).0 -
Personally I would freeze it. As your son has had an operation he may be a little more vonerable (sp) than normal.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Thanks Rikki - I did wonder about that! Will freeze them after they've cooled down.

Question about stock -
I have some HM chicken stock in the fridge which I'm going to defrost today to make some soup.
After making the soup can I then re-freeze it??

Provided it has boiled for a while then yes it can be refrozen. I work on the mantra of defrost - cook - refreeze, its not kiled me yet. Bread and pastry can simply be refrozen too.The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0
