Why Use Credit Cards?

Where is the miss-information ?

Your experience is what I described. You paid £130 which was £30 for rental and £100 deposit. You were able to do it because you had £133 in your bank account. If you had £129 in your bank account there would have been a problem with using your Debit Card.

If the car rental company had not refunded you the £100 deposit, then what would you have done ?

Again you don't understand. It was the same scenario regardless of it being a credit or debit card! £130 both ways.

Some may well say "well I bought a playstation 3 and paid it off over a couple of months". Fair enough. Why can't you save up for it over a couple of months and buy it when you have the money ?. Why does it have to be bought now ?.
..Because you might get shot, stabbed, blown-up, knocked down by a bus etc...Then you never got to enjoy your play station, life is for living and enjoying, not marshal-discipline.

One must remember that this is a public forum and one must try to behave responsibly. Or at least tell the truth and be honest.

    I agree with this statement.

I also do tell the truth to the best of my knowledge. If I am mistaken then I am happy to be corrected. You have said that I am passing on miss-information regarding the payment of car rental, but you haven't said what I said that was incorrect. I would appreciate it if you would be specific about what you are referring to ? Thank you.

...please give me an example of "mis-informed data" if you are refering to what I think you are?

No it wasn't. With a Debit Card you needed the physical funds in your Bank Account. With a Credit Card you needed the "available credit". Two very different things.

And once again we are covered under S75 of the CCA...correct?

The Credit Card transaction is covered by Section 75 of the CCA.

The Debit Card transaction is not covered, although VISA Debit does have a Chargeback system but this is not a legal requirement and is something that VISA offer out of goodwill.

Yes I see what you are saying. But, I am saying that you can hire a car quite easily with a debit card. This is something that is not stated many times on here. In fact there have been many posts claiming it to be near impossible to rent a car without a credit card.

I agree that yes you would need the deposit either available in your bank account or as available credit on your credit card. To be quite honest, that's the same difference to me, or at least pure semantics.

Not really. The deposit can take a few days to get back into your bank account if you do it through your debit card. Which if, like in your case you were only left with £3, could leave you in a spot. How are you meant to fill up the car/van whatever with fuel to replace if you have no money in your bank account. With a credit card it just means the deposit is taken off your available credit balance for a few days.

    Very Well put LoopyGirl.

Why allow the funds to leave your Bank Account, even if only for a temporary period, when you could simply use "available credit" which should not have any financial implications for your day to day expenditure.

I know that storminbalder and littleowl will not agree, but there really are a lot of advantages with using a Credit Card rather than a Debit Card.
