I recently received an e-mail from a friend with the following information, can anyone tell me if the info is true or false.???
ATM - PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know
If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse.
For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM
system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card
you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you
requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately
dispatched to the location. This information was recently broadcasted on
CTV by Crime Stoppers however it is seldom used because people just don't
know about it.

Not True but was suggested at one point.

Ta for the swift response Dougie, I thought it was too good to be true.
Keep up the good work with the pies, I need to cut down also. (19st 2lb).

Definitely not true - I know because my PIN has the first and last numbers the same, and the second and third numbers different e.g. 1231. I have entered the second and third numbers the wrong way round on a number of occasions (when my brain gets fuddled) which would mean I've entered the whole pin backwards i.e. 1321 - and no police squad have ever turned up!0

It's an urban legend. Hypothetically, if this were true, then anyone who used the same palindromic numbers for their PIN (eg 1111, 2222, 3333 etc) would always have the police by their side every time they made an ATM withdrawal!
Realistically, if you input your PIN wrongly the ATM would not give you any money - why should it? It would give you a number of attempts and then just swallow your card.0 -
From The Association For Payment Clearing Services (APACS) website:
Despite internet rumours, the police will not be dispatched to your cash machine if you enter your PIN backwards.

I beg to differ, Snaggles. I used to have a cc with a palindromic number, and it was 1111 surprisingly enough. I don't have the account anymore, in case anyone gets funny ideas!0

Don't you think the banks might have let us customers know about it if they were going to spend millions on implementing it?!

No! What the OP says is completely true, and if you don't forward this information to 10 friends right now then you will die instantly of some horrible, incurable disease.Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right!0
