    Hi guys
I have been thinking about starting to get a veg box delivered, especially with the winter approaching (groan) I will be making more stews and soups etc. So I was wondering where you all get your boxes from, I'm not sure there is anywhere near me that does them. I am near Walsall/Wolverhampton in the West Midlands?

If you type your postcode into www.bigbarn.co.uk you are very likely to find box schemes and farm shops etc near you.

If you don't have any luck with that come back and let us know and we'll see what else we can find for you.

  • The first one is (I think!??) Jerusalem Artichokes - yummy, but make you fart! :) Makes a nice soup too.

The second one is Swiss Chard or Chard (aka Perpetual Spinach) - tastes a bit like Spinach (I like it) - cook as you would Spinach (briefly) and it will shrink a lot. Nice steamed then served with a little butter, lemon juice and lots of freshly grnd black pepper. Yum!

    Hiya,

Not too sure about the first but am SURE the 2nd is silverbeet. Thats what we call it in NZ anyway! Its similar to spinach. Wash thoroughly, make sure to unfurl the leaves as bugs like to nestle in the folds. Slice out the stalks and cook as you would spinach. Is yummy in a quiche too.

    Hope this helps,
    Al.

First one: definitely Jerusalem Artichoke - very good in soup (sautee chopped onion chopped carrot and chopped JA and when soft add stock, then when cooked blend the lot - serve with dash of cream and black pepper to taste) or roasted, scrub and put in oven, roast as you would do for small baked potatoes - this way makes you fart less.

Second one: Beet greens, silver beet, red chard, all names to indicate a green leaf that will be delicious like this: sautee a couple of chopped cloves of garlic and some chilli (if you like spicy) in a large pan. Wash greens well, chop finely and sautee (NOT BOIL!!!) in the oil and garlic mix until soft - you might need to add a bit of water if it gets too dry, but be careful as it cooks quickly.

Meanwhile cook some short pasta (macaroni, twists etc). When pasta is cooked and drained, mix with the cooked greens. Put in a baking dish, add chopped feta cheese and mix the whole lot. Grate some cheese on top, put in oven until cheese on top bubbles. YUMMY effect guaranteed!

I had my first box from Abel and Cole just now. Doesn't seem a lot for the money though.

Run of the mill selection too.

What do I do with these beansprouts? They are in a punnet but are not fully sprouted?

  • Celeriac in todays box - any good recipes?

If you use the search and choose advanced and then write celeriac* in the search box, and then down at the bottom click on the little button to "show posts" (instead of show threads) you'll get about 40 results, some of which are recipes that you can pick from.

    HTH :)
