My Child Software Deposit never to be seen again

Hi All
Back in April 07 i was called by a company called My Child offering a trial of educational software, the whole package was to run over 2 years with regular software & magazines being sent for a total cost of £77. They said that i could try the software out for 14 days for a returnable deposit of £7 and if i didn't return it they would debit my card with a further £70.
We received the software a few days later but my children didn't get on with it so i returned it. No further payment came off my card so i was happy just waiting for the return of my deposit. I've emailed them on several occasions and they respond saying they'll sort it out. All the telephone numbers i have managed to find for them either are disconnected or just ring on and on for ever.
I haven't been able to find anything out there on the web about this scam. I presume that either i'm the only one who has had this problem or more likely people just haven't noticed that theyv'e been scammed.

I assume that's mychild.co.uk?
had a read through of their t+cs
http://www.mychild.co.uk/aboutus/terms.htm
If it is the case that it was for the special offer pack it does state:
3. Returns and refunds for my child Special Offer Pack
Customers are only eligible for a refund of monies paid to my child in return for receipt of the my child Special Offer Pack, if the goods referred to previously are returned to my child Returns, 235 St John Street, London EC1V 4NG within seven (7) days of receipt of goods. Customers may at any time request to stop receiving information and benefits that they receive as part of their complimentary membership, however, no refund will be given in these circumstances.0 -
It seems just the deposit of £7 plus any p&p charges to return the package."Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye."...Miss piggy0

Hi
I had a phone call from them last week, they were due to phone back today to see if i was interested in taking up the offer, as i understood it the £7 was to cover postage and packaging. They never actually told me how much it would all have costed but on hearing from you i think i shall give it a miss.
lou xIts been the longest three months..... success is nearly insight:T ....... Money in account :beer:0 -
DON'T accept this there are many people out there myself included that signed up for this either sent it back or never recieved the software and still had the £77 taken from there account and cannot get a reply from mychild either by email or phone. They have been reported to trading standards and watchdog.0

I received a phone call from them on Thursday asking if I wanted to trial some free software to help identify where my son needs help on his SATS. I had to pay £9.00 postage which was fully refundable once the software discs were returned as it was only a 2 week trial. I asked if there were any other costs involved and was told on a number of occasions that there was not and my £9.00 was fully refundable on return of the discs. They work alongside the government so they wanted volunteers to trial the discs.
Yesterday my parcel arrived along with stacks of goodies (so far so good right????) until I saw a letter enclosed saying how great it was that I had signed up for 2 years (yep you read it correct) 2 years worth of my child magazine at a cost of £89 and the good news is that only £80 is left to pay because they had collected my first £9!
OMG I cannot tell you how angry I am that they can get away with this. The letter says my credit card with auot deduct the £80. I've spoken to my credit card company to make it clear I have not authorised this payment but as cc payments are guaranteed they cannot stop it from being taken.
I have called the cancellation number and been on hold for 2 hours with no answer. I have e-mailed and written a letter and returned the parcel first thing this morning with a letter stating how wrong this all is.
How can they be allowed to get away with this?
Isn't this fraud if they take the money without my agreement?
I'm feeling sick over it all.

My wife received exactly the same phone call with no details about a subscription and we're having exactly the same problems cancelling. Phone line is not manned (inspite of it saying our dedicated staff are always on hand to assist!), and I am very concerned. I'm returning the items received immediately via Recorded delivery even though it states you have to contact them first. That's impossible. Mychild seems far from honest in its dealings.0

I've been duped too! Had the phone call in april, they took the £9 discs never arrived. Emailed lots, threatened with TS, got a phone call apologising, they had my postcode wrong. Promised to send out another one. Nothing yet received. I was checking my credit card online today and on 15.05 they took £80!!! I have emailed them again but after finding this thread (didn't think to look on here) I am guessing I'm not going to see that again.
It's bad enough when they do things like this but I haven't even received anything from them. My husband will go ape IF I tell him.Need to sort my life out! :T0 -
MyChild! ... Alot of people over on the competition thread have had trouble with them! http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=829331&highlight=mychild"Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Hi Guys,
Same thing happened to me, after ringing numerous times was told a cheque would be sent out that day.
After a week rang them again and they said that the cheque had been left in the draw and they forgot to post it.
Waited another week, no cheque so rang again, was told the new book keeper had lost my cheque!
In the end i emailed the editor and got it sorted.
If you are still having problems give this email address a go.:D
