Lands end to John O'Groats for Re-cycle (MSE charity)

Hi All,

My OH and I are currently planning a bike ride from Lands End to John O'Groats for Re-cycle, a charity that sends bikes to Africa. It's one of the MSE charities this year - http://www.re-cycle.org/

Anyway we are new to all this sponsored stuff and also there are parts of the ride we don't know very well so I'm hoping for some tips from the collective wisdom on here!

Firstly - how do you go about asking friends, family, work colleagues for money?
Secondly does anyone have any tips on doing this in the most money saving way possible? All the moey raised will go straight to the charity, but obviously we would like to save our own money by not spending too much, and if we go uder my budget we'll donate teh difference to Re-cycle!
We've already booked our tickets to Penzance - £27,10 for both of us bargain!

Finally any tips on any of the locations we're going through would be great (route below). We're planning to stay in YHA accomodation where possible and otherwise find BnBs - so local knowledge welcome!

For anyone that's interested our route is, we're doing it quite slowly about 60-65 miles a day as we're not very experienced long distance cyclists and 65 miles is enough for us for now! The routes referred to are sustrans route numbers.

Arrive in Penzanze by train, cycle to Lands end and Back (approx 20 miles)

Penzance to Golant YH via St Austell
Golant to Looe, follow directions. Route 2, Tavistock to Moretenhamsted B3357 then B3212 Mortenhamsted to Street. Follow day 3 CTC route, Take B3151 to Glastonbury.
Follow Sustrans route 3 to Bristol then route 4, cross River severn at chepstow turn to CTC day 4 high road to St Briavels CTC day 4/5 to Ross on Wye. B4228, B4234 Then Day 5 CTC to Clun
CTC day 6 clun to chester
CTC alternative day 7 (plus our own variation) Chester to Garstang
Garstang to Kendal on route 6
"Rest day" Kendal to Windermere
A592 to Troutbeck, CTC "alternative route through Lakedistrict tourtbeck to carlisle" Carlisle to Hethersgill then use BnB route to Peebles
Follow BnB alternative route ot Edinburgh (avoiding city centre), join NC1 near Cramond follow to Perth
Route 77 and Route 7 to Aviemore
Route 7 to Inverness, Route 1 to Culrain
Route 1 to Tongue
Tounge to John o'Groats (with possible diversion to Dunnet Head most northmost point)
Cycle to Wick -12 miles catch Train Wick to Edinburgh (7 hours)
Train Stirling to Reading

Just bumping this up, as I'm sure someone must be able or willing to give a hint or help?! It's a great charity we're raising money for - giving people in poor countries a hand up - lots of the recipients of the bikes use it to start their own businesses, or to get to school, or just shorten the round trip to the well!

Just want any tips on any of the locations, ideas about how to ask for sponsorship, and any other ideas anyone has?!

You can set up a just giving page http://www.justgiving.com and forward that to people.

    Thanks Ahai,

Just checked and unfortunately this charity isn't on just giving, being as they are small (have contacted them and apparently the admin fees on just giving are too high for them), but they do have an online donation page, they've said they will set up an option where people can donate towards our sponsorship total.

Hi, I've not had any personal experience with this sort of thing but you could try contacting the B&B's on your route to see if they would be willing to provide free or reduced price accomodation, breakfast etc. I am sure many will be willing to help seeing as it's all for a good cause.

    Good luck wth your cycle

Although the fees for JustGiving seem high, they say that they are usually covered quickly, and that is certainly our experience, that it pays for itself when anyone does a sponsored anything, eg my son shaved his head and raised over £100 with minimal effort through a JustGiving page.

However, there is a similar but free service available from My Charity Page - see if the charity will register for that. There is a paid option there, but the basic 'set up a page and get money to charity' is free. Haven't used this one yet so can't comment on its effectiveness!

We have been using www.mycharitypage.com for a few months now and have been really impressed with the reporting and functionality, both our payments have been paid in the bank on time as expected and we have recieved a payment from HMRC for the gift aid claim they filed for us.....great for a free service!

Along Route 1 to Tongue, look for the Crask Inn - they have accommodation and they said that they often have charity long-distance cyclists staying there.

    Good luck!
