shop  like granny

I came up with an idea yesterday  saved me a fortune and burned of  millions of calories as well

I parked the car down the street  and took 2 carrier bags into safeway. Just like granny used to have 2 shopping bags

I shopped like I could only get enough to fill the two carrier bags AND hump them down the street to the car

shopping that definately would have come to over £30 came to  £13.70  and when I got back to the car I was puffing and blowing like id ran a marathon.

when I got home Id gotten all I went for  but with no  added extras I couldnt resist

try it   it saves money and gets you fitter

i almost always walk to my local supermarket (small sainsburys, just over half a mile away), and take my own bags.....partly with the idea of not buying too much....

BUT all too often i end up getting too much or going to the market as well, and i can hardly carry it all home!

maybe i'll set myself the challenge of being more strict sometimes!!

its fab actually - 2 days a week, and if you go at about 4pm you can get more fruit & veg than you can carry for a few quid!

I carry a couple of folded up bag for life bags with me all the time and so I've always got them rather than taking new bags, plus as has been said - it's good to have a limit on it so you can carry it home!

Only time I regularly go over is Farmer's Market day - I park at the supermarket just outside town, nice walk up to the centre, do the market where I get good local value to fill the bags, back to the supermarket, stash the bags in the car, take out my coolbag instead and thank the supermarket for the parking with a bit of custom :)

Works really well and I'm always really happy during it!

ps Love the fact that the supermarket - Waitrose, to give them a deserved namecheck - also has money changer machines just inside the door, so I also take a minute to change my notes from the cashpoint into pound coins and 20ps - appreciated usually by the stallholders at the market.

Doing just what my parents and grandparents used to do here this year - Growing my Own!!!!!
and if you're really canny you dont even have to buy the seeds, some of your family or neighbours might have grown too many seedlings and will happily let you have one or two to pop in the garden or in a pot!
We are growing our own peas and beans from seed - doing very well, and my Dad has given me 3 tomato plants ( moneymaker, gardeners delight and beef tom one, plus got two tumblers to come that will grow in a hanging basket!!), plus courgettes, and got cucumber and pepper plants to come - at no cost to me!
all I have done is pot them up on the patio or amongst the flowers in the garden and they will produce plenty for us to eat and maybe even freeze some later in the summer, plus will be so much healthier too. Even my Uncle has given me a gooseberry bush.
and no struggling to the supermarket to worry about!
though if you do want to save money, go in just before closing and hit the reduced food section - our local supermarket quite often sells the stuff off for stupid prices like 10p!!!!

Just gone back to this thread and had a thought.

Had did Granny shop for Christmas???

Did she start planning months in advance like(some) of us?

I don't know as both my grannies were really old (no I mean REALLY old) and couldn't do their own shopping/cooking by the time I remember about things like that and my poor old Mum had to do 2 Christmas's-1 at our house and then one at her Mum's house.

I do remember however that we always had beetroot for tea as my Uncle ken always used to spill it on himself amd the best tablecloth(his excuse was that his Mother in law(my Gran) had booby trapped it deliberately!)
