Get yourself a juicer, chuck in any fruit that is on the way out and make smoothies0 -
HelenYorkshire - One way to reduce waste from kitchen disasters is cook the sauce seperate first, meat seperate if needs be, then you'd only be wasting a sauce if something went wrong
I'm in, will report any waste. I did work on this last year but think I may have slipped a little since.
Dried milk I have used successfully in puddings inc sweet and savoury - yorkshire puddings work well with itOne day I might be more organised...........

.......I found a huge tin of Marvel dried milk in the cupboard has anyone used it for milk puddings at all? as I have quite a bit of rice, semolina ect that I want to use up. I have to keep my protien intake up at the moment so I make a pudding every day. Does it really work well with puds? .........
I've used dried milk for puddings and had success with it. Just make sure that, if it's a pudding for the oven, that the milk powder is fully dissolved in the water. You will probably not get a 'skin' on the surface - or at least not a substantial one (that's mostly fat anyway!).
This was a favourite with my kids:
I used to measure out the amount of dried milk for one pint then the sugar and ground rice to go with one pint of milk.
All those dry ingredients went into a saucepan, add a pint of cold water and stir to dissolve the sugar and dried milk powder. Bring to the boil slowly while stirring all the time to prevent sticking. Once boiling, reduce to simmer and keep stirring until it's the correct consistency - only a couple of minutes - then turn off the heat. My kids adored that when they were young - obviously served with the obligatory dollop of jam!0 -
Today I had to throw out nearly half a loaf of Asda 'Extra Special White Bread with Cracked Wheat' and it nearly killed me to do it. The bread had all broken up in the wrapper, then sat on my kitchen worktop for too long and gone mouldy. Should have made breadcrumbs with it when it first broke up  !
I have got a bit of a reputation for being Mrs Miser in my house. OH often goes shopping mid-week and will bring in potatoes. I always hide the new ones and continue using the ones in the cupboard without him knowing.
Today, I turned 5 large black bananas into two lots of Banana Bread. THIS time they were a real success - had some failures in the past with the mix still being very wet in the middle. Both of these are now wrapped in greaseproof paper and in tins (one of them hidden at the back of the cupboard with yesterday's fresh potatoes)!

I saw this on the BBC News Website and was horrified. I would love to join in this challenge to reduce our waste even further. This should also help me in the Grocery Challenge - the less we waste the less we will need to buy.

One thing I regularly do is to check my fridge for veggies that are either beginning to look a bit sad or are likely to be before I get round to using them.
Then I bung the whole lot in a veggie soup in the slow cooker.
They don't always "work" - in that some of them taste lovely, and some of them taste liked boiled grass
The ones I don't like are whizzed up very fine and saved in portions in the freezer. Any time I'm making up a stew or casserole, chilli or curry I'll add some of my boiled grass and, where necessary an extra stock cube and or herbs and or spices to make sure it's completely masked.
Note:- This is also a good way to get vegetables into your fussy eaters - they'll never know that they're there

I did not throw out much food yesterday, but I did throw out some mashed potato. OH had cooked too much and rather than keeping it to one side and freezing it I foolishly served it up.
OH has agreed to cook up smaller portions of mash, especially as we have recently seen the 'Too Fat to Toddle' programme and can see that on occasions the portions we feed our kids might be a bit on the large size.
I already weigh out rice and pasta so never over cook these portions.
I also weigh out frozen veg so we always have just the right amount of these.
I have just frozen some HM houmous in an ice cube tray so that it doesn't end up in the bin, and I can get out portions as I need them.

Would like to join the challenge and try to reduce my waste even more. I have DS1 who would eat anything and DS2 who is fussy and OH is very much like DS1. We do have the odd day where food is wasted, but alot of the time we just have peelings that are put in the composter.
I have been think about one of the composters that you can put cooked food into, sprinkle some sort of bran on top and what is left can go into the normal compost. Was wondering if anybody uses this method and what it is like.Grocery Challenge 2013: July week 1 £90/£87.41

I'm in for this challenge, I'm not too bad and I do try to use up leftovers as much as possible but there's always room for improvement.
I'm trying to get my waste down to zero for everything, so really I'm not buying much other than food at the moment.
I'd better go and check the fridge to see what's for dinner this evening!I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead
