Hi All,
Anyone sold a car privately & can recommend where to advertise? I've stuck it on free Trade It website & put a sign up in it, but no joy yet.
It seems quite expensive to advertise in all the different publications, so wondered which ones you have had best success with?
I'm after in the region of £1200 for it, which seems about right in comparison with others advertised.
Need to sell it in the next 12 days or the insurance will run out - AARRGGGHHHHH!
Advice please?
Thanks,
FE

Hello FairyElephant
I'll move your thread to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. What car is it?
I listed my (performance) car on www.pistonheads.com and sold it within a week..
Also what about owners forums for sale sections? Free and people who have an interest in the specific car will see it listedI would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!0 -
You have to price it right - cheaper than other similar cars, but not so cheap that people think there's something wrong with it.Happy chappy0

Exactly, price it right, clean it up and use free adds.
If you or a friend live on a main road, park the car on the front with a prominent sign, almost always brings quick results in my experience.
If it is not a bargain it will not sell quickly so balance the extra hassle/risk of having it sat around uninsured and factor that into your asking price.;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Bare in mind that the £1200 quoted as the figure for similar cars is the asking price, not the actual selling price.
If you want a quick sale, consider listing yours at £995,( under the £1000 mark ).;)0 -
I think the autotrader section for under £1000 is cheaper listing.
Ebay is probably your best bet though.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep
& Choo Choo for trains!!0 -
Agree with others advertised price and selling price are two different things. So it probably make less than £1,000.0
-
Start it on Ebay at 99p then people pay what they want to pay and you get rid of it quickly.0

Thanks All for your advice.
A bit more info on the situation:
Similar car to mine seems to be advertised in my area at £1395 - it's a year newer than mine but MUCH higher mileage, as mine is V.low mileage for it's year.
I'm actually willing to take £1000, which is why I pitched it at £1200, although you are right, if I advertise it at under £1000 it is cheaper, but I guess i'll still end up having to take an offer on it, as everyone wants to haggle and feel that they got a bargain (guess I am no exception to that!).
I have to pay back £500 to my parents when I sell it, and I really need the other £500 to pay my OU fees as I've taken the plunge to go back to studying.....so don't want to take much less than the £1000.....The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"
