Cold Call about PPI Reclaiming

Options
Hello All.

Apologies if i have posted this in the wrong place so if i have then please excuse my newbiness.

I have searched the forum for this info but cannot find anything on the particular company... I received a cold call today from a company called "Credit Reclaim Services". The company rang me on my home phone to inform me that i am entitled to reclaim PPI i paid on a previous mortgage (paid off about 5 years ago) and an unspecified loan. The person i spoke to knew who the mortgage was with but could not provide any details on the loan other than the amount.

The person on the phone told me that after a paid a fee to cover the AVS Check (not 100% on what this is) they will then do the rest and that i would receive at least a 4 figure sum when the fees are reclaimed. They mentioned on the phone that they are registered with the Ministry Of Justice and their reg number is CRM15425.

I didn't give out any details on the phone and they said they will call back in a few days once i have had the chance to investigate the details they gave me.

I have done several background checks of this company and they appear to be linked to several other companies in other trades - none of which i can see are linked to financial services.

Details on the company that i know from the MOJ:

Business Name: Credit Reclaim Services Ltd
Address: AVC House, Northampton Lane, Swansea, SA1 4EH Trading Names: Credit Reclaim Services
Sector: Financial products/services,
Authorisation Number: CRM15425 I have also got the following details:

Telephone Number - 0800 009 3233
Company Number (companies house) - 06667592

So.. My first question is... How on earth did they get this information and where from? They knew my full name, address and telephone numbers as well as my mortgage provider details (albeit, slightly out of date). I am very nervous about this as they surely should not have this information and i have read about similar companies who cold call to peoples work and use other methods to harrass.

Any advice on this would be greatly apprecaited.

Regards,

B

I think you will find that your details were passed on to them by the broker who originally dealt with your mortgage.

In these lean times it seems that some brokers have decided to bite that hand that fed them by passing details of their past clients on to these vultures who, with no evidence to back up their claims, will then contact you and promise £££££'s back to you in return for a 'small' up front fee. It would be amusingly ironic if it turned out that some of these brokers actually sold the PPI themselves and ended up being the one's claimed against.

Do yourself and everyone else a favour and report these cretins to the Ministry of Justice. Hopefully they will eventually get a real job.

Thanks for your reply Brock, in your opinion, should i have anything to worry about in regards to these details being passed on?

I am very paranoid in regards to who holds details on me, especially financial details, considering the current climate of identity theft and the such...

With my mortgages, i tend to sort them out myself, directly with the provider but in the case that i mentioned, was the first and the only time that i allowed a browker to sort it out on my behalf. The broker is local too so i have a good mind to go and have a quiet chat with him.

I am sure they must be breaking some kind of law by doing this, data protection, etc..

Whilst the broker will probably point to some obscure term in the smallprint that you signed at the time which authorised him to pass details of you and your financial circumstances to all and sundry, I would certainly go and express your annoyance with him directly.

Also a complaint to the MoJ about the call you received - cold calling over the telephone is not strictly banned, but very much frowned upon - if enough complaints are received then something may be done.

Although I am loath to advertise the fact, here is an example of the claims management low lifes trying to drum up business via brokers.

I find this action completely unbelieveable by brokers - they are in essence almost stating that the product/service they provided at the time is flawed. Complete idiots.

That is unbelievable, i think i will be paying a visit this week...

I'm glad now though that i do not tend to go through brokers for my mortgages and loans, i guess i was just unfortunate in this case that the one time i did, it was with a completely moraless idiot.

Thanks again for your imput Brock, it has at least cleared in my head where they actually got my information from and not any other (possible illegal) channels.

When i do go and see this broker, can anyone give me any advice on what to say to get the best possible response out of him? Any legal terms that are good to use or any active Government Acts i can make him sweat with? As Brock said though, i probably signed my life history away in a form at some point with him so i won't hold out too much hope of a reasonable response.

    Thanks

    B

Just one caveat to what I've already posted - I am not saying 100% that this is where the claims company got your information, but it seems very likely. Please don't shoot me if I'm proved wrong

No problem, looking at it, i agree that it is the more likely source as that is the only difference to how i usually conduct my re-mortgaging, etc..

Thanks again for your input Brock, i'll keep the forum up to date should i get any more info but would also appreciate anyone elses input into this especially if they have had prior experience.

    Thanks

Anyone heard of the PPI registry?

This is where the company got my information from according to them? They said that when the mortgage was taken out with the PPI then the broker had to file my details with the PPI registry.

Anyone know anything about this? I can't find anything on the web about it.

No but must admit I am getting lots of calls from companies that state

"we are working with the ministry of justice" in their first words. Its so annoying. They make out they are a government body.

    Me too.......

Even though we are registered with TPS, it doesn't always stop these calls, its a right pain if the number is withheld.....

I have also been having a few missed calls, telephone number 00000 000000, if you can actually call that a tel number...... .

Even when we are here to answer the call we tell them we are not interested.....they say they are there to help with finance, then another time about insurance and so on, my hubby told them where to get off last time but the calls keep coming....... and our number is withheld as well.

  • A word of advice, try this one, ask for the name of the company who is making the call, then the name of the person, (make a note), then ask them not to ring again and point out that if they do, it can be classed as a nuisance phone call and they can be reported. Look at your phone book, go through the terms & conditions for using a telephone system, or the "how to report nuisance phone calls" bit! most cold callers are quite shocked about how easy it is for them to get in trouble for this, even more shocked when a member of the public tells them ;)
