Vegan cooking without a cooker - any ideas?

Options
Hello,

Well, I've moved into my new house and gone back to vegan (from v strict veggie) all in one go - hooray!

My kitchen contains a sink and two cupboards - that's it! I've managed to scrounge a fridge-freezer and cooker from a neighbour but can't get them into the kitchen yet because it's downstairs in the basement. I don't have a microwave either.

Last night, I cleaned out the fridge-freezer and plugged it into a socket in the living room, so I have at least got somewhere to keep food cool now (even though it's on a different floor from the rest of the kitchen).

But I'm finding my diet somewhat limited without the use of a cooker or microwave - I bought myself a Tesco Value toaster for £3 and so far my meal ideas include:

- Toasted bread
- Toasted potato cakes
- Salad
- Cereal with soya milk / Alpro yoghurt

Has anyone got some more imaginative ideas??? Now that I've got a freezer, I could make bulk meals and freeze them down, but what can you make without heat?

Thanks in advance of your inspiration!

I would have thought it's impossible to cook without heat. Many years ago I lived in a bedsit and the cooker gave up the ghost. I told the landlord about it but it was at least a year before he did anything. I lived on toast, chocolate and fruit all that time!
  • Mmm... I'm starting to think you might be right - if anyone can do it it's the fabulous people on this board!

I did have a little thought - I could make a sort of raw stew by chopping up vegetables like carrot, cucumber, baby sweetcorn, mangetout, peppers and mushrooms and make a sauce to go over them... could boil up some cheap noodles to go with it (throw away the soup packet!), but there's not a lot of protein there...

Do I just have to give in and buy a microwave?

I have a 3-in-1 slow cooker, steamer and rice cooker. Would that be more use than a micro? It's very small as well. I strongly recommend you search freecycle or a local secondhand dealer for a micro rather than buying one new.

    Thoughts on vegan protein...
Could you buy tinned pulses and pour boiling water over them to heat them? You could drain the water off, ad some finely chopped garlic/herbs/spring onions/tom paste to flavour.

Asian-type soup - boiling water, splash of rice vinegar, splash of soy sauce, chopped garlic, fresh chili and add sliced tofu (+ noodles and whatever veg). Maybe chopped fresh coriander too.
  • Thanks Plum Pie - love the idea of the soup, I'm going to try that tonight!

What's the slow cooker thingy-bob then? Not sure I've seen one of these - how do they operate and how much are they normally (although I'll probably be second-handing anyway)?

  • Bean salad?
    Hoummous?
    Cous Cous?
    baked bean toasties?
    instant noodles?
    miso soup?
  • I've read of people cooking food in a thermos flask. Put ingredients in and top up with boiling water. Google that and see what you come up with!

Thanks, but I don't much fancy cold baked beans - urrgh! (nasty enough warm :p )

Miso soup is definitely up there - it's funny how much you forget when you haven't done it for a while

I'd really like to do as much made from scratch rather than buying in Tesco's pre-made bean salads and pot noodles, but that might be a stretch too far! :rotfl:

Pour boiling water over pasta and leave to stand ( put lid on) for about 10-20 mins and it will cook just fine. You could then grate vegan cheese on top and dollop of soya spread. Yum

Put pasta/spaghetti in saucepan, pour over boiling water, put tight fitting lid on (or cover with plate & tinfoil), wrap in your duvet or similar & leave for about an hour.
You could add grated cheese, chopped herbs & butter, soft cheese, grated veg etc.
