Wireless Networking

Options
Hi, How safe is wireless networking? I have 2 pcs wireless. One laptop one a pc. I have disabled the SSID, I have mac filtering in place, I have a hardware firewall built into the Router, I have up to date anti virus, and software firewall. Am Using WPA-PSK encryption 63 charaters; SPybot; Adaware, spywareblaster, etc etc.

Would you feel safe this way? And would you feel comfortable to use this set up for internet banking etc?

Thanks for your help/ideas

I would be reasonably safe with your setup. Remember nothing is 100% safe but you have taken every sensible precaution.

I certainly use internet banking and have less sceurity than you.

would be a firewall with segmenting

  • IMO MAC Filtering is not really any good. It's so easy to spoof a MAC address..

How ever, that doesn't mean take it off :)

The same is often said about disabling the SSID broadcast! All of the data is still there to be seen by anyone interested but it simply doesn't have an ID flag attached. Some say that this only draws attention to it, but does not make it any more secure.

Knoppix-std means you dont even have to go looking for the individual programs, all right there in their own operating system!!!!

I'd be surprised if you could crack wpa-psk. Especially if the shared key is chosen sensibly and not left vulnerable to dictionary attack, which is its Achilles heel.
