I have a combined router ADSL modem the Netgear DG834G.
It works a treat and have been very happy with it for a few months now.
However after talking to my neighbour the other day it seems my ADSL connection is being made available to everyone on the street!
How do I lock it so that only I can use it.
BEWARE: I'm not that techinical so please convert any advice into muppet text!

You need to log onto your router. Recommend using a wired connection incase things go wrong. Use one of the 4 ethernet ports on the back and connect via CAT5 cable to your LAN port.
In internet explorer type http://192.168.0.1
A password box will appear. Type in your details - default is "admin" "password" but you should have changed the password by now.
If not do it afterwards.
A router web page will appear
At the left side there should be a "setup" heading. Under here a "wireless" option.
Click once.
You will see a security section.
The radio button will be selected with "disable"
Change this to either WEP or WPA.
You can then select the encryption options.
WPA is the highest security.
Below is another section.
You should have the option for passphrase.
Type a memerable word that people cannot guess into here then press generate.
This will generate an encryption key.
Write this down, or copy the code into notepad.
Press apply.
The router will update.
On your computer (assuming Win XP) Control Panel, network connections. Right click, properties. Wireless network tab.
Highlight your network and press properties. In the network key area complete the details the same as what you put into the router.
Press OK and then exit control panel.
Windows will now be talking to the router sorting out access via encryption.
You should get a message in the bottom right corner saying now connected.
If not ok, use the LAN again to retry.
If succesful, return to control panel, network connection. Highlight the wireless connection and right click. View available networks.
It should say next to yours "Security enables wireless network"
I have the WGT624 cable router but it should be pretty much the same.

Thanks for the extensive explanation Ben.
But when I click on "At the left side there should be a "setup" heading. Under here a "wireless" option"
I get the following error!
System Authentication Failed.

 Did you use the link it has a specific full guide with graphics :wave:0

Have you got more than 1 browser session open and logged into the router? or more than 1 computer logged into the router?
I'll try to re-create your problem on my router

Ok sorted out original problem.
I have selected WEP as my version of XP doesn't list the WPA-PSK option. Created a passphrase and copied the keycode down.
I've clicked on the wireless link icon. Entered the key that was generated but my computer wont access the network????? It recognises that one is available but wont log on.
I looked at the adsl guide pages and my Windows XP looks a bit different from what they show.0 -

Ensure no other pc's are connected to your router (could be a problem if you are unsecured) and reboot your router. I have had this a couple of times with my 834 and a reboot has solved the login issue. After securing the network also consided turning on access control for the trusted wireless stations as well, it's under wireless settings - setup access list.
Read through the stickies here...http://forum1.netgear.com/support/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=a12e544eb89247796722b446a82931c6 you should find them helpful.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
Ok I've tried everything and no luck so I think I'll find the customer support number and try them.
Lets hope they are switched on!!0 -
Thanks BenL for your post/instructions on how to secure Netgear DG834G. I have meant to do this for months but didn't know how. Followed your instructions for main PC where Netgear DG834G is set up and changed the security settings to WEP. Then switched on laptop and entered WEP Key number to get it to connect it worked OK, switched on other PC which has a netgear wg111 USB adapter, changing the setting on it was different from changing the laptop, didn't have to enter the WEP key number, changed the settings to WEP Key then typed in the Passphrase and its working fine also.
thanks

All sorted!!
Spoke to techie support and it transpired the problem was with the wireless card I use with the laptop. Its an OvisLink Airlive and it's crap! It doesn't work very well with windows and it is impossible to use XP to configure the WEP settings!
I have managed to download a utility programme from OvisLink website that has allowed me to enter the WEP. A pretty clunky workaround but it works and I'm happy.
Thanks ever so much to everyone for your help!
