Window cleaner

Options
A couple of weeks ago I rang for a quote to have our windows cleaned. He told me it would be around £15. I said I would speak to my wife and get back to him.

Later that day he called back and spoke to my wife and said he was in the area in a couple of days time and could do them then. My wife told him we were moving in a few weeks and needed them done just before we moved out and that I would call him back to arrange it.

Today, a week before we are due to move, he has cleaned them whilst we were out. At no point did we ask him to do this, and is still a week from when we needed them done! He has put a bill through door for the sum of £25 asking for a cheque to be sent!

Firstly, this is completely useless to us as we needed them done for our checkout next week and secondly I would never have had him do them at that price (the last time we had a window cleaner it cost £6). We are only in a 2 bedroom terrace house!

Any ideas as to what we should do now?

If he calls for his money tell him the cheque is in the post and when you move out don't tell him where you are going! £25 to clean windows is a rip off unless you live somewhere with as many windows as Buckingham Palace!

the going rate in my part of sussex is £8 for 10 windows, patio doors and a small conservatory. thats when he is in the area though, not a booked clean.
  • £2.40 in my area for the front of a terrace house. I would tell him to get stuffed at that price, he's taking the Mick.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

    OMG!
I pay £3.50 for 6 windows (One of them being 10' x 5'), and that's only just gone up from £3.00.
    I'd want super-long-lasting-bird cr*p-resistant-streak proof-ever shiny-magic coating for £15/25! lol

I agree with not telling him where you're moving, but I MIGHT leave a tenner for the new owners to pass on to him if need be, as a bit of a goodwill, to save him nagging them for your details.

You asked for a quote, not booked a job.

If he wants to clean your windows off his own bat that's his choice, but he has no right to then charge you for it, especially when he's been told more than once you didn't want them doing at that point.

If you want to give him a goodwill gesture to save the next residents any hassle, then that is your decision, but I agree £25 is extortionate.

    Thanks for your comments.

I was going to write to him as I didn't think I could remain calm if I phoned him! I was just about to send the letter and he phoned us again and spoke to my wife. I don't know what she said to him but he is coming back when we move now and doing the windows again and also the insides as well.

I was tempted to just ignore it until we moved, but decided we wanted to get it sorted.
