Fly Drive honeymoon to USA

Hi,

My fiance and I are getting married in August and wanted to do a fly drive holiday instead of laying on a beach for 2 weeks. I have had a look at numerous websites but cant believe the variation in costs!! Ourplans are listed below so if anyone has any ideas i'd be most grateful.

7th September London Heathrow - New York (4 nights in a hotel)

11th September New York - San Francisco
Pick up a car and travel around San Francisco, then down to Los Angeles and then over to Las Vegas where we can drop off car and fly home on/around 28th September

These dates are flexible but must be after the wedding on 14th August for obvious reasons. If anyone can recommend a decent package, flight, hotel or car hire that would be great.

Thank you

  • airline-network - Does this site do multi city as i couldnt see it anywhere?
  • San Francisco, then down to Los Angeles and then over to Las Vegas

Is it possible to move around your plans and drive to vegas via yosemite & deathvalley? we drove the above route last year and it was breathtaking!... LA was good, but didnt have any wow factor and the main thing i remember about LA was the awful traffic! lol

  • Yeah that would be good!!! This is the first time i have done anythign like this so i am open to any suggestions. Where did you hire your car from? What did you do about stopping over night (any recommended hotel chains)? Do they have our equivalent of a travelodge or holiday inn etc???
  • hi Chris :)

We booked car through netflights.com ...no one way free between San Francisco & Vegas :D
San Francisco we stayed at Tuscan Inn Fishermans wharf
    Yosemite = House keeping camp
Bishop = Creekside inn loved this place!
    Death valley = Furnace creek
Vegas = MGM normal, MGM Signature and Mandalay Bay

I'm setting off for a week end up'north ..but i will give more details about accommodation when i return.

    Happy Planning!!

I'd check kayak.co.uk for flights (they do allow multi-city/open-jaw searches), carhire3000 for rental car (if there's a one-way fee they will give you another option without - our price went up £12 for no one-way fee) and book hotels with each hotel directly. Booking hotels direct will generally give you more freedom to cancel if you change your mind or find a better deal.

Other option on hotels (except Vegas as it doesn't make sense for Vegas) would be priceline - but you have to understand how it works and be happy with any of the hotels that fit the criteria you've selected. We were very happy with our priceline hotel in LA but we did a lot of research beforehand.

For Vegas have a look at the Vegas thread here for all kinds of good info. There are a few people there that have done plenty of west coast driving holidays similar to the second part of your proposed route.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

have a look at travelsupermarket for car hire. holiday autos, and usrentacar are worth a look.
opodo, ebookers and expedia for flights.we got a good price for june in the BA sale.
tripadvisor for hotels.take a look at the thread on here "the cheapest way to stay in holiday inns" if you like them.
you can get good prices on travel zoo for hotels sometimes.
we aren't hiring a car till we leave san fran as we don't think it is needed and parking can be expensive.
in san fran we are staying in the donatello 3nts
we are then driving to monterey 1 nt-americas best value inn.
san luis obispo 1 nt-peach tree inn.
LA 4nts- santa monica holiday inn
palm springs 2 nts- the chase hotel
and san diego 3nts.haven't picked a hotel yet. then driving back up to LA for the flight home.
whatever you decide you'll have a great time.enjoy
