USA Fly Drive holidays

Hello - we're thinking of doing a 14ish day fly drive holiday September/October time next year (car and hotels as opposed to campervan), and want to take in Los Angeles, San Francisco (although we're open to other suggestions here)and Las Vegas/Grand Canyon. We don't want a whistle stop tour, preferring to spend 3/4 days each in LA and SF, with a couple of days in the Grand Canyon, and the rest in Las Vegas. Has anybody already got an itinerary that they have done which we could adapt, or recommendations for routes, hotels etc?
Many thanks for any help

I've heard Los Angeles is a dump, stay in a nearby city/town like Santa barbara (north) or San Diego (south) instead as you'll still be a couple of hours drive from Disney and places like that.

Your best bet would be to fly to San Francisco and fly out of Vegas. You can book multi airport trips on BA and Virgin official websites. Think they are the only airlines that will do those flights direct too.

San Francisco is a must, loads to see and do, perhaps go to Yosemite park for a day or 2 after which is about 100 miles east.

The drive from San Francisco south along the coastal road is lovely and theres places like Carmel you could stay at or stay at a beach villa perhaps at Santa Cruz. check out holiday-rentals.co.uk . Then drive onto the gridlock of LA or nearby.

En route to Las Vegas depending on where you stay go via Mojave Dessert or Death Valley or Joshua Tree park.

Hotels are cheap in vegas (pricier at weekend) and grand canyon is nearby but motels are on the rim anyway and very expensive. perhaps go on a day trip from vegas as its about 4 hours away by car.

    Perhaps an itineray could be
    San Fran- 4 nights.
    Santa Cruz - 4 nights
    Las vegas- 4 nights

with a night spent in a motel en route to your next stay to avoid long drives.

Everything you could ever want to know about a US road trip is on tripadvisers road trips forum :

    Some utterly invaluable stuff there.

    Have fun !

Hey davjan. I have just come back from a week week tour of the west coast and Vegas/Grand Canyon and had an amazing time. You will cover a lot in 2 weeks and will love it.

Our route went pretty much from San Diego, LA, Monterey, San Fran, Yosemite, Death Valley, Grand Canyon and then Vegas.

All of our hotels were superb and everything went to the plan. The only bad part was having to fly home.

Ask me anything you like, but get those flights booked.
