Turf or Seed for New Lawn

Hi I want to take up a patio area laid with flags and create a lawn area.
The Flags seem to have a small amount of sand ontop of the soil.
If I can turf or put seed onto this then obviously it wouldn't need levelling, but will it grow?. The alternative is to put some top soil over the top, but to what depth?. I want to do this in the next couple of weeks and if I can then seed would be the cheaper option.
Any gardeners? please advise Thanks

Well I am not a trained gardener but like gardening, the sand below the slabs may have concrete or whin in it so,why dont you turn it over about 4 to 5 ins deep rake it level,I would turf it its a lot less hassle than grass,I put down turf once at midnight in pitch dark and a wee bit drunk. It grew fine and is still growing.A wise man changes his mind, a fool never will.

Hi Joto,
I'm no gardner either but a friend of mine is very good and he says that your best option is to turf on top of the soil! The sand is actually good for the turf as it helps with the drainage of the water!
Good luck0 -
but seeding is cheaper....
I paid £7 for 2 boxes of seed from woolies against a quote of £80-100 for turfEx forum ambassador

Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping to seed if I can because as you say it is cheaper and its not our main lawn area so we will be able to keep off it until next year. I think I may have more problems with seed taking though onto of the sand/soil mix that is there at the moment.Depending how much (depth) top soil I would need for the seed to take could make turfing cheaper,if I dont need to add as much top soil.Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves0

BBC - Gardening - Basics - Sowing a lawn
In my view a seeded lawn is far superior to a turf lawn and will if sown over the next few weeks be established fully by next year. If you forked over the top six inches of sand/soil now and let it lie for a week or so before raking it level you should still have time to get the seed sown before mid October. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program
