Britons throw away third of food

Options
On the bbc website:
Britons throw away third of food

Around one third of food grown for human consumption in the UK ends up in the rubbish bin, new figures reveal.

Statistics from the government and food industry show each adult wastes food to the value of £420 each year.

So I am already saving £420 a year, no wonder my friends have no money. Plus the deals and reduced to clears etc.

Someone must be wasting £840  - because I don't waste anything (any more).

Maybe the BBC should put a link over to this site, we'd sort em out :D

It does include what caterers and people in restaurants who get given/order too much food - but even so. I really hate binning anything and I make myself plan around what I have, even if I dont fancy it, I mean I cook for myself so if I have it then I chose it.

I always clear my plate. I cook for 4 meals and freeze it and I think what I have in the fridge when I pop into the shops on the way home so I can use it up. Perhaps this is part of the reason why I escaped student debt and think my wage is fine when my friends outearn me and cant manage

I threw away a manky carrot about three weeks ago (threw away as in, put it in the compost tub rather than ate it) so I have only saved £419.95. :o

Throw nothing away...I have my other half instead of a food bin. Anything I don't eat, he polishes off. Fortunately we don't have pets....who knows what he would do with pet food

I've even been known to pick off uneaten food from my son's plate and stick it in the fridge for my lunch the day after :o

I scraped the leftover bits of baked potatoes and grated carrot from my kids' tea into a saucepan, and will be making a nice soup for tomorrow's tea.
Does this mean I have saved roughly £422, because so called 'fresh' soup costs a couple of quid!
I rarely throw food away, crusts make breadcrumbs, leftover veg goes into casseroles stews soups and curries, i even made a soup with rice in it yesterday and it was lovely.
Once I have my 2 chickens any 'unusable' leftovers will be given to them. Anyone got any ideas what i can do with the porridge my littlun invariably leaves (i have tried reducing the amount - makes no difference  )

I go mental if I waste food. I had to this week as I made spag bog from already cooked meat from the freezer. There was a little left over.

I cooked some extra pasta and sauce for hubby to take to work. We go out for a hour or two to come back to find that he had put it in his pasta and sauce for lunch the next day. And left it out so it was it was still luke warm. I went off the walls. I said what are you trying to do give yourself food poisoning. As you can only heat already cooked meat once. And you never leave meat out at room temp. You are asking for trouble.

Not sure what you can do with left over porridge. But personally I would throw it away until you get the chickens. As I can't imagine it would be very hygenic to re-use to be eaten after it has been in or on someone elses plate/bowl. And they have put spoon/fork in there mouth and back on or in the food. But that is just me.

I heard them talk about this on Terry Wogan this morning.......They made some gag about having a cookbook of recipes for left overs...little did they know how us MSE'ers have beaten them too it!! They also said they're waiting for the book....you are what you didn't eat!!
