Well as I was expecting from TalkTalk, they have now announced price changes (some decreases and some increases) just like BT recently announced (see here).
That means other teleco's will eventually follow by example from BT and now TalkTalk.
Looks like a Call Connection fee and Whole Minute Charging is going to be the norm shortly so remember to thank Ofcom as this is partly due to them and their idea that competition alone would prevent price increases!
UPDATE 1/10/06: It appears that the price changes although removed shortly after they first appeared (1st Sept), re-appeared again on th 13th September.
                Price changes commencing 1/10/06
Calls to mobile numbers:
Calls to mobile numbers account for 25% of our customers' call costs, so our new pricing will have a significant impact.
We've changed our network tariffs (excluding 3) to one single lower rate per time of day, with new savings of up to 33% on calls at the weekend, 32% on evening calls and 17% on daytime calls.
We're also 0.5p cheaper per minute than BT for calls to mobiles on the four biggest networks, Vodafone, O2, Orange and T-Mobile, which account for 95% of our customers' calls to mobile numbers.
And for our customers who make a lot of calls to mobile numbers, our Mobile Extra calling feature will be reduced from £1.50 to only 95p per month, and save you a further 25% on all our mobile rates.
Calls to 0845 numbers:
We've reduced our rates on calls to 0845 numbers by 33%. Plus, you can still add an 0845 number to your Calling Circle and save a further 33% on all calls to that number.
Calls to 0870 numbers:
As part of our policy of matching or beating BT's prices, we've reduced our rate on calls to 0870 numbers by up to 5%.
Landline local and national rate:
The post-inclusive period rate for evening and weekend calls (i.e. after the 70min per call limit has elapsed) will increase to 2.85p/min - We are still cheaper than BT as they charge 3p/min
Connection and per minute charges:
We will be removing the minimum 5.25p call charge from all calls and applying a 3p call connection charge, just like BT.
We will also be moving to per minute billing, also just like BT.
Both of these changes will apply to all chargeable calls excluding calls charged a fee per call (e.g. calls to our directory enquiries number 118111, charged at 35p per call) and calls charged a fee for an inclusive period (e.g. an evening local call for 69 minutes).
More information here.Price changes commencing 1/09/06
From the 1st September 2006, the standard monthly call plan subscription price for Talk2 will reduce from £3.99 to £3.89
This is applicable for all new Talk2 customers (when taking Line Rental), and all existing customers currently paying £3.99 will be charged £3.89/month from their next bill cycle (and any promotional discounts will be adjusted accordingly.
That means other teleco's will eventually follow by example from BT and now TalkTalk.

Talk Talk cannot even get their comparisms right.
On their comparism pdf TT v BT here http://media.phonehouse.com/mediaserver/servlet/AssetServer?id=PRICE183203&ver=1&RD=YES
TT say that BT 0845 calls are 1p a minute at weekend from 1/10/2006 where as they will be 0.5p.
I quote from BT site.
"Reductions in 0870 and 0845 rates
From 1st October 2006, the call rates for residential customers making 0870 calls will be reduced to 7ppm from 7.51ppm in the daytime, reduced to 3.69ppm from 3.75ppm in the evening and remain at 1.50ppm at the weekend. 3p set-up fee applies. Also, the call rates for residential customers making 0845 calls will be reduced to 0.5ppm from 1.5ppm at the weekend and will remain the same at 3ppm in the daytime and remain the same at 1ppm in the evening. This change will mean our 0870 call rates are among the most competitive in the market."0

So despite what TT might have you believe because of the 3p connection and the per minute billing ,the cost of making chargeable calls goes up just like it has on BT.Especially short calls.0

Another sneaky increase by TT is if you exceed your 70 minute allowance on UK georaphical calls .At Evening and weekends they use to charge 0.9p a minute from the 1/10/2006 its 2.85p a minute.
Every little helps to pay for their Free? Broadband Debacle:D0

I believe that TT would have followed BT price changes anyhow regardless of whether TT offered free(?) broadband or not.utilitybroker wrote:Another sneaky increase by TT is if you exceed your 70 minute allowance on UK georaphical calls .At Evening and weekends they use to charge 0.9p a minute from the 1/10/2006 its 2.85p a minute.

I'm surprised that TT have reduced their NGN call costs though which in the past they have kept them higher because of the underlying way these numbers work. They can probably afford to reduce their NGN's now that they are actually making more money from ALL chargable calls thanks to their Call Connection Fee & Whole Minute Charging.0

Yes but BT have been charging 3p a minute at all times for a considerable time, once you exceed the 60 minutes. It was TT who were offering the benefit of cheaper Evening and Weekend Rates. So they are not following BT Price Changes in this case.So i would suggest they are looking for any way to drag in more revenue.0

I believe they would have followed BT anyhow but this time they had to look at 'extra' ways to earn revenue without being more expensive than BT so they could pay for their free(!) broadband hence why an increase once you have exceeded TT's 70min limit.utilitybroker wrote:Yes but BT have been charging 3p a minute at all times for a considerable time, once you exceed the 60 minutes. It was TT who were offering the benefit of cheaper Evening and Weekend Rates. So they are not following BT Price Changes in this case.So i would suggest they are looking for any way to drag in more revenue.
Now that Call connection fee has been introduced then down the line I think BT will increase it to 5p (still cheaper than cable alternatives) for which TT and the others will just copy them.
The call connection fee is a very nice little earner for them and I'm surprised BT haven't done this sooner.
Despite what Ofcom think, competition in the landline area isn't is nowhere as competitive as it is in the mobile area.0

Just think of the number of punters (many still waiting for anything like a full service) who're now trapped into TT for 18 months!
Sneaky.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

I agree. These punters may think they're ok and escape it because of their inclusive minute plan but they don't because of the increase in the call if it lasts over 70mins albeit they can avoid this by redialling, or, the increase it will now cost them for every single 084x/087x that they make and these days its hard to avoid ringing them unless you're lucky and its on the SayNo database.Heinz wrote:Just think of the number of punters (many still waiting for anything like a full service) who're now trapped into TT for 18 months!0
