Options
What do you find the best way to keep the fruit from buying to eating! Is an open metal basket better than the old large dish? If if goes into the fridge it can get forgotton about, So far better out and eaten BUT I had two mandarins turn mouldy and they were bought this week! I dont buy alot at a time either (never bogof as I know we would never eat it all!!)

ideas please.

I keep all mine in the fridge now because shelf life seems so short these days. The only exception is bananas which are often so green they take a least four to five days to ripen. Prior to that I used to keep it in an open weave wooden basket.

My fridge is seldom full to the brim so I can see that I've got fruit there; I make a point of always keeping it in the same place - and I visit my fridge often each day for milk for my never ending :coffee:

To store citrus or hard fruits for longer than a week, wipe each fruit with a dry cloth and wrap in newspaper (use the freebie newspaper they plop through your door each week!) Pack in a poly bag or a box and store in a cool, dry place.

So that you *don't* forget about them, either jot a note on your calender - or keep a note on your fridge door.

We get through a lot of fruit (sweetie day for the boys is a Friday only) and in the main it is on "display" in a big dish on the coffee table. I buy from the Farm Shop (it's cheaper) and because I'm an old scrooge, I only put out in the dish the amount I *know* will be used. I then fill it up every few days from my *store*.

Like others most of my fruit is in the fridge (except bananas of course). We find that it stores for ages, and after a while we got use to delving in the fridge for an apple or pear (etc...) when we wanted it.

  • mine lives in my desk at work, it wouldn't get eaten otherwise!

i tend to find apples last around 2 weeks and banana's maybe a little less, but i do tend to buy them green.

I keep mine in a metal basket thingy in my room. I don't have room to keep much in the fridge because I only have 1 small shelf. They seem to keep fine in there.

I have found if your bananas do go too soft for eating, you can place them in your freezer whole with skin on until you are ready to make a banana cake, muffins etc. I have done this for years and it saves dumping bananas if you don't have the time to use them straight away. The skin goes black but inside is fine. Just defrost for a little while until thawed out. Great site.

Oh Queenie! How your post made me laugh as it brought back memories to me.
After the war when bananas were scarce and expensive, my mother told us that someone she met had lost her daughter to banana poisoning as the girl had eaten three bananas.
Shortly after our marriage, my husband came home to find me in an awful state. I had just absentmindedly eaten a banana, though I had two for brunch earlier. Was I going to get banana poisoning? How he laughed when I told him the story.
    Doh!

Awwww, Margaret!! :rotfl: *my daughter used to chew on the ends of her hair - she overheard a friend talking about her cat getting "fur balls" ... my dd turned puce and started gagging; she thought *she* had a fur ball from her hair :D Stopped her though ;) *

First orange my sister was given after the war ... she bit into it without peeling! She'd never seen one before ;)
